Futon Company DeepSleep pocket sprung mattress alternative?

Alper

Hi,
We have been using a Futon Company DeepSleep pocket sprung mattress for 10 years now and we are still very happy with it.

We are now buying a super king size bed and they don't make super king size mattresses.

I believe this mattress is on the firm side but I am not sure about the exact details as they don't say much on the website now. What would be a good mattress for us from JohnRyan?

We are both 1.65-1.70 meters tall and between 55-65kg. To accommodate for a better mattress we are considering either an IKEA Brimness bed or Nodax solid pine bed. IKEA is sprung slatted and Nodax is flat slatted.

Any advice? Thanks.

Hi Alper,

Many thanks for your question about the Futon company's mattresses and what the alternatives are.

The mattress you have now is a basic one-sided synthetic pocket sprung and manmade foam. There's very little detail on their site about the pocket spring tension (which is always based on your body weight).

There's also no detail on what the grams per square meter are of the upholstery fibres or density of the recycled foams they use. Like you say its hard to work out the exact firmness in the comfort layer. It looks at first glance like a lot of firmer recycled fibres inside.

The listing only has the following detail:

  • Recycled fibre fillings, foam, latex and pocket springs

It's interesting that they list latex in this product, as there's no detail on it such as the blend or which layer features latex. True latex is only found in mattresses around the £1200 mark so maybe they've listed this as the foams recycled and blended in case you have an allergy to latex.

Looking at the limited information it looks like a more solid firm foam mattress than anything else. Which is clearly the feeling you prefer given you've had it ten years.

We would recommend you look at our Origins Pocket Reflex hand made pocket sprung mattress. It's two-sided unlike the futon model and will give you a firmer feel from the upholstery laters on top of the pocket spring unit. For your bodyweights, you both require a 1.4 medium gauge pocket spring.

Origins Reflex Mattress

1: 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER

2: ONE INCH REFLEX FOAM LAYER

3: 270GSM POLYESTER

4: ONE INCH REFLEX FOAM LAYER

5: 1000 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS (MED OR FIRM TENSION)

TOTAL: 1020GSM

DEPTH: 33-35CM

All of our hand made mattresses are suitable for slatted bases. However, we do advise that if the slats are more than 2" apart you add some ply or mdf to board over the slats. This is because gaps over 2" can actually damage the mattress as its forced to conform to the gaps between them. You can read more on slatted bed bases here and IKEA beds in general.

We have a really good explanation on the difference between flat and sprung slats here to help you.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
John & Ryan
