Many thanks for your question about mattress toppers for heavier sleepers.

Mattress toppers are always used to soften the very top comfort layer of a mattress. Ie to add a deeper upholstery layer to sink into thus helping to soften the feel of a mattress. A mattress topper will never firm up a mattress if it is already too soft. The firmness of a mattress is sometimes mistakenly thought of as the spring tension ie soft, medium or firm springs but it's actually the mattress upholstery that provides the tension or feel of the mattress.

The spring tension is always based on body weight and has little bearing on the feel of a mattress other than to provide the correct support for a certain bodyweight tolerance.

The issue you're going to have with any topper is that at your bodyweight of 23 stone most toppers are going to fully compress almost instantly. Mattresses and toppers are usually made with an 18 stone weight tolerance in mind so with this in mind you'll need a much deeper topper say 7.5cm or more. It may be best to use a combination of two toppers say a Latex topper and then a deep microfibre topper too to give more volume to accommodate you whilst still providing comfort. A microfibre topper can be shaken each month to fluff it back up.
