Which mattress would be best for us Artisan Pocket or Bespoke 004

We want to purchase a new mattress for our wooden bed frame (double - not enough room for anything bigger!). My partner is about 14/15 stone and had a spinal fusion operation in the lower back some 10 years ago but his back problems are ongoing, his neck and shoulders are now affected. He was comfortable with his very old Hypnos mattress which was very firm, but I found it too firm. I am about 11 stone, curvy for want of a better word! and also suffer with arthritic pelvis and knees after a horse riding accident (what a pair!). We are struggling with the mattress that we have on the bed frame at present it seems very 'boaty' and is rubbish really. We were recommended to try yourselves by someone who had purchased one of your mattresses. Please could you advise us on a mattress you think would be suitable with our two problems. I have looked at the Artisan Pocket and Bespoke 004. He says he likes/needs firm, supportive, and hates memory foam (too hot), I really don't know what I like, but definitely don't like a firm Hypnos! I have tried toppers but didn't like memory foam either. Although it is probably not a lot in the mattress world, we could spend £1500. A decent night's sleep would be good, is it possible for that price? Thank you.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for your question.

The major considerations when advising on the most appropriate mattress, are body weights, preferred feel and ultimately, budget. Whilst I appreciate that your partner may prefer a firm mattress, it is not what we would normally recommend for someone of his body weight. I am aware that until recently the advice for people with back issues was to go for a firm mattress. However, this advice has been found to be incorrect and organisations such as the Institute of Chiropractors has issued advice to the contrary. Please read this article http://www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk/time-to-change-your-mattress-244-news.aspx.

Both your body weights dictate that you ought to look at a medium tension mattress as this will provide the support you need whilst the upholstery layers will provide the comfort. As you are probably aware, the information available in respect of the construction and upholstery of Hypnos mattresses is limited in terms of the GSM (grams per square metre) of the upholstery layers making any form of comparison impossible.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I note that you have indicated that you have viewed two products, the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 and the Artisan Bespoke 004, those in a medium spring tension will provide the appropriate feel for you both, although the Artisan Naturals is probably a better option. I am unable to give any form of assurance in respect of them remedying your medical conditions, but they certainly should help. I would not advise you to purchase of a topper until you have had the mattress for at least 14 days, as you may find it is not needed.

I trust that this is of help, but if you have any further queries, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
