Choice of mattress

A customer asked

I am 71 years old with a weight of 13 stone and my wife is a little younger and has a weight of 10 stone. We have used a Maestro 3000 mattress ( super king size zip & Link made by the pocket spring bed company - now defunct) for the last 8 years. We both got firm mattresses and while my wife finds hers comfortable as it eases her neck problems, I find it uncomfortable because of my wide shoulders. I telephoned yesterday to discuss the matter with your friendly specialists, and was steered from the Artisan luxury towards the Artisan Bespoke 004 ( both medium tension) as it would be firmer for my wife. Our budget would also reach the Artisan Bespoke 002, would this give a better chance for my shoulders to sink into the mattress? Should we also consider a mattress topper - my wife overheats with any latex, and I see you recommended a microfibre topper from 'Soak & Sleep' to one of your customers. Can you give me a steer on how to what you think would be the best combination please. Our existing divan base is in good condition so we would probably re-use it.

Hello there,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  The advice you received from my colleague was correct in that the Artisan Bespoke 004 will provide that firmer feel for your wife with a medium spring tension. You both fall within the range of body weights which dictate a medium spring tension and whilst the Artisan Bespoke 002 is a great product and has the same upholstery layers, the overall feel with the double spring unit may be too soft for your wife and if you went up to a firm spring this would be unsuitable for you both.

As far as your existing divan base is concerned, if there is nothing wrong with it there is no need to replace it. Some retailers will suggest that you should replace both mattress and base at the same time, although this is usually to increase the cost of your purchase, which may affect their commission, but is not necessary. Bases do not get the same amount of wear and tear as a mattress so will last longer.

I would advise that you use the mattress for at least 14 days before deciding upon whether to purchase a mattress topper as to buy before or at the same time, may be an unnecessary expense. If you require any further guidance or advice prior to placing an order, please do not hesitate to call our office on 0161 437 4419.  Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
