Comparable mattress to Beautyrest without heat retention issues?

A customer asked

We are currently on a quest to find the right mattress for us. We tried the Tempur Cloud which was comfortable, but unbearably hot. We then switched to a natural sprung mattress from Dreams Flaxby collection and went for the top of the range. The mattress is cooler, but it is not supportive and actually feels as though it's shrunk. We had to use a natural mattress topper so that the indentations were not so marked. We then slept on a Beautyrest Plush pillow top mattress in New York (Crosby Street Hotel) which was the most comfortable mattress we've slept on, although I found it still a little warm. We want to buy a mattress as close as possible to this one, but one that mitigates heat retention. We've already got low tog duvets and leave the windows open even in winter. We currently have a kingsize but want to upgrade to super king and we need something supportive, yet comfortable like the Beautyrest Black as my husband has an operation coming up and we simply cannot manage with our current bed. Your advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there,

Thank you for your question.

I have searched the internet for specific details of the Beautyrest Plush Pillow Top you refer to with little success. This makes providing details of any comparison in terms of construction and upholstery, impossible. The details of the Beautyrest Black confirm that it is again a pillow top with memory foam and pocket springs, although apart from this there is little else that can be gleaned from it's online description.

We do not make pillow top mattresses or recommend them as they have an inherent flaw, in that when the top flattens, which it will do over time, instead of just replacing the topper, you have to replace the whole mattress. We would always advocate buying a mattress with a separate topper, so that this situation does not occur. Unfortunately, memory foam is renowned for heat retention and uses body heat to soften and then retains that heat an reflects back. So, I would avoid such products if you have heat issues.

As far as pocket sprung, naturally upholstered mattresses are concerned, I would suggest that you view the Artisan Naturals, Artisan Bespoke 004 and the Artisan Bespoke.  Each of these mattresses have a different feel from the upholstery layers or comfort layers being either medium or firm.  We would need to know your body weights in order for us to recommend the correct spring tension for the mattress.  The springs in a mattress are there to give you support and that support is dictated by body weight. Once you have viewed these products please call our office on 0161 437 4419, with full details of your body weights so that we can provide more specific advice as to spring tension and suitability.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Kind regards Julie
