We bought a firm John Lewis Natural 5000 kingsize to go on a solid bed base and think we should have boguth a medium one. I've read what you say about putting a pocket spring mattress on a slatted base and the neat to put some sort of thin board between the slats and the mattress.
Can you supply king-size slatted base and covering - must be in 2 parts to get up ancient staircase.

Hi Ian,

Sorry to hear you're struggling with your firm mattress from John Lewis.

Putting it on a slatted base won't soften it. Only by putting your mattress on a sprung edge base, like the ones we sell here will soften it. However, it won't soften it from a firm to a medium spring tension. Spring tensions are made for weight tolerances, more on that here, so if it's really too firm you may need to put a topper and a sprung base with it to make it soften to make it more comfortable.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We also don't supply MDF or pegboard for bases, you can buy this from any do it yourself store and it's usually a really cheap fix. We have a guide here on slatted bases.

We hope thats of some help, please get back in touch if you need more assistance.
