Thank you for your enquiry. The very first thing to say is that you both require a medium in terms of spring tension/feel which will give you the correct support required. detailed in the attached article.

If you are intending to use your existing slatted base, we would suggest placing some form of barrier, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF sheeting over the slats. This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and avoid ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. This will also make any mattress placed upon it feel ever so slightly firmer.

There is no doubt that your back issues will be being aggravated by the use of your old mattress as it is very important to have the correct support from the spring unit and comfort from the upholstery.
