Content of Hypnos mattress
Hi Gary,
Thanks for answering my previous question. I am still a bit confused about what bed is best to go for. I found your article on why you should choose a bed based on content rather than showroom feel very interesting but I am struggling to choose between one which felt better in the few minutes I lay on it and one which I am wondering if the content is better. I am 9 stone and like a softer feel and sleep on my side.
The two I am trying to choose between are Hypnos Willow Sublime which is upholstered with layers of 2,800gsm Wool, 500gsm Wool & Silk blend and 2,000gsm Alpaca - £1400 for king, medium tension and Hypnos Maple suburb upholstered with layers of 2,800gsm Wool, 800gsm Wool & Cashmere blend and 2,000gsm Horsetail - £1200 for king, medium tension
The willow was softer and felt better in the few minutes I lay on it in the shop but I am wondering if longer-term the maple would be better. You seem to rate horsetail as a material, is it superior to alpaca and more resistant to sagging? I am surprised at the low price of the horsetail one and am wondering about getting this one and then adding a topper if it is a bit hard.
What do you think?
Thanks again for your excellent site and advice
Hi Christina
Thanks for your question.
I would always recommend the mattress that contains horse hair or horse tail, as this will always help to prevent sagging and dipping on the top of your mattress. This is why we use the horse hair and horse tail layers in between the softer layers of upholstery in the Artisan Luxury mattress to create a soft feel mattress that doesn't dip or hollow. Please see the table below in which we compare our Luxury model to the Vi Spring Devonshire;
John Ryan By Design Artisan Luxury | Vi-Spring Devonshire | |
---|---|---|
1 | 1200 GSM British Fleece Wool and Cotton | 600gsm British Fleece Wool |
2 | Hairproof Cambric Cover | 1700gsm Devonshire Fleece Wool |
3 | 1200gsm Pure Horsehair | NA |
4 | 500gsm Pure Wool | NA |
5 | 1200gsm Pure Horsetail | NA |
6 | 500gsm Pure Wool | 300gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton |
7 | 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs [51mm] [1.42mm] | 1326 Calico encased Pocket Springs [54mm] [1.52mm] |
Total GSM | 4600gsm | 2600gsm |
The mattresses in the Artisan range can be paired with either a soft, medium or a firm spring tension, the correct tension is determined by the individuals body weight.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
You are quite right in thinking that adding a mattress topper if the mattress feels a little firm, will help to soften it for you.
