Help choosing a quality mattress for side sleepers

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 2 comments

My partner and I have looked at quite a few mattresses, both online and in-store. We have done the Dreams' sleep test and it has determined (as I had previously suspected based on research) that medium firmness mattress is appropriate, as we are both side and/or back sleepers, and only weigh between 8-12 stone. I have shoulder pain issues, so finding a good mattress is quite important to me.

Additionally, I do get quite warm at night so having something with good cooling properties is also important.

We tried a Flaxby Master's Guild 4450 Pillow Top Mattress in-store, and were happy with it in our very limited testing, but I have some concerns about a pillow-top mattress' longevity.

We were also recommended some gel-top mattresses like Tempur, which felt nice at the time.

We currently have a combination mattress from Emma, which is rated medium-firm, and is definitely too firm for us, although we are otherwise happy with it.

Any recommendations you can provide based on this?

Hi Ivaylo,

Thank you for your question. Your current Emma Hybrid mattress is too firm for you. If you do not have enough cushioning for your shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your side it can cause pressure pain in these areas. Given your sleep positions, we would recommend a medium level of comfort with cushioning in the top layers for your shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your side but is more supportive underneath so that you do not sink in too much when sleeping on your back.

We do not recommend pillow top mattresses as you can not prolong the mattress's life span by regularly turning the mattress to give the upholstery layers time to rest and regain some loft. When a mattress is rotate only, your hips tend to be in the same position on the mattress which means this mattress area is in constant use. You can replicate the feel of a pillow top mattress with a separate mattress topper. Both parts are fully turnable and when the topper reaches the end of its life you can replace the topper rather than replacing the whole mattress.

The Flaxby Master's Guild 4450 Pillow top mattress has a combination of man made fibres and natural fibres in the upholstery layers. Natural fibres wick away heat and moisture and help you to regulate your body temperature. It also contains micro HD springs which we do not recommend as they offer nothing in support but do take up space where more luxurious upholstery layers could be. Our Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 has a similar make up as it is constructed with 85% natural fibres. This is a two-sided mattress at a similar price point.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

At your body weights, we would pair you with the medium spring tension to give you the correct level of support. This will allow your body to find its level and not be forced into an unnatural position.

What is the significance of the dual-layer pocket springs used in the Artisan 2000, vs something like the Artisan Naturals? Is one better than the other for particular usecase?

Hi Ivaylo,

The difference between the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 and the Artisan Naturals is the spring unit used in each mattress. The Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 contains 2000 spunbond pocket springs which provide a slightly firmer support in this mattress whereas the Artisan Naturals contains 1600 calico encased pocket springs which are more breathable. Both mattresses however contain exactly the same upholstery layers providing the sleeper with a medium level of comfort.

If you require any further information or advice, please do not hesitate to contact us either by way of telephone on 0161 437 4419 or email [email protected].
