Hypnos mattress sagging and causing back pain
I bought a Hypnos Natural Wool Excellence (medium tension) 9 months ago but have been suffering with bad back ache since we've had it. I'm a front sleeper and find the mattress too soft and feel like my spine is bending like a banana! The mattress has also started dipping (which i understand to be natural settling) which has added to the softness and discomfort, despite us flipping and rotating the mattress for the first 3 months and monthly thereafter.
I'm 5ft 8 and 63kg and my husband is 6ft and 90kg, so both medium build.
We paid a lot for the mattress but we will need to replace it as I find it so uncomfortable and struggling to sleep.
Please could you recommend the best mattress from your range to suit my needs? Being a front sleeper, maybe a firmer mattress is best for me? I'd also like a mattress that doesn't naturally dip and settle over time. I had my old John Lewis pocket spring mattress (natural collection, natural linen 5000, medium tension) for 10 years and never had any issues with dipping or sinking.
Thank you!
Hi Katie,
Thank you for your question. The medium spring tension within your mattress is providing you both with the correct level of support for your height and body weights. This spring tension supports body weights up to 107 kg (17 stone), depending on your height.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The issue with your mattress is the upholstery layers. It is the fibres on top of the springs that determine how the mattress feels and not the springs. The Hypnos Natural Wool Excellence mattress contains 7 fleeces of wool, one of the softest natural fibres used in mattress manufacturing, and a layer of Talalay latex. Whilst there is no density given for the latex layer, it is described as 'Layer of sustainably sourced Talalay latex for a soft luxurious feel'. This mattress has a soft or softer medium level of comfort, whilst your previous mattress, John Lewis Natural Linen 5000, has a medium level of comfort.
As a front sleeper, you are sinking too much into the comfort layers, which is creating an unnatural arch in your spine. If you have the mattress on a pocket sprung base or slatted base, you could try boarding over the base with MDF or Plywood which will firm up the internal support. Alternatively, a firm mattress topper should give you a more medium overall feel.

Any fibre-filled mattress will settle where you lie the most. When a mattress is made, all the upholstery fibres are completely flat and level with the piping. Adding the piping and the tufts compacts the fibres and creates the domed area. As you sleep and move around on the mattress, the upholstery layers soften and flatten out. As we are creatures of habit, we tend to sleep in the same position on the mattress, the upholstery layers in this area settle, but leave the surrounding upholstery layers like new. This looks like the mattress has sagged or that there are raised areas on the surface of the mattress, especially in the larger sizes like kingsize and super kingsize where no one sleeps in the middle.
Foam and Latex mattresses behave differently; they will still show body impressions if you sleep in the same position each night, but they do take longer to show this. As you are looking for a mattress that doesn't sink in, I would recommend a Latex mattress. The only mattress we have within our range that would be suitable for you is the Origins Latex Support mattress with medium springs, which will provide you with a firmer medium level of comfort.
I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
