Thanks for your comment on mattress toppers.

Unfortunately, a mattress topper will only ever soften the comfort layers of a mattress. It's not possible to truly firm up a mattress with a topper. This is because mattress upholstery is layered up from firmer to softer layers, so even placing a firmer topper on top of softer upholstery won't have much effect.

Memory foam mattress toppers should be avoided as they compress at an alarming rate and retain lots of heat. Just google the many thousand complains about memory foam toppers. Latex is a far superior mattress topper material. We use 70kg latex which is a true medium feel.

The best way to firm your bed up without buying a new mattress is to add a layer of plywood on top of your base (if it's a sprung edge divan) this will help firm it up slightly. if it is already on a slatted or platform top divan base then this won't have any real effect.

It may be worthwhile checking why your mattress is not too soft and what's causing the need to firm it up? It may be old age or the fact that the spring pocket spring unit is not the right tension for your bodyweight. There's a table below to help.
