Allergic to wool mattresses: alternatives discussed
What alternatives are there for people who are very allergic to wool? (Or perhaps are vegan). This seems to be in many quality mattresses and having tried them, I know this is an issue.
Hi Pam,
Many thanks for your questions about wool allergies with mattresses. You're right that wool is used a lot in high-end mattresses, mainly because it's highly breathable, soft and has a high loft (bounce) making it perfect for mattress upholstery.
However, if you are allergic to a fibre you really should avoid buying a mattress that contains that fibre. No matter how well separated the fibres are bu hair proof covers etc there's always a chance you will get in contact with it or the proteins that the fibre contains thus setting off your allergic reaction which no one wants!
We have written extensively about mattress allergies here and why hypoallergenic needs to be taken with a pinch of salt when buying a new mattress. We prefer to focus on avoiding allergens completely and using mattress maintenance to reduce contaminants not replying on 'hypoallergenic labels' that can be misleading.
If you want to avoid wool then please look at our Artisan Vegan Latex mattress below. It contains 100% plant fibres with no wool in sight! Containing Coir Coconut fibre, Organic Flax, Talalay latex, Rebound Cotton and Natural Bamboo this mattress provides deep comfort for the sleeper. The comfort layers are responsive to the sleeper wanting a cushioning sink before the 1500 Pocket spring unit provides the support.
