A customer asked

Hi I spoke to John yesterday. I'm interested in buying a mattress from yourselves. I am interested in the Artisan Naturals - Kingsize. This mattress is priced at 849 this is a really big purchase for me and I really can't afford to get it wrong. Part of me thinks its crazy to spend so much and the other part of me wants the luxury of a good nights sleep. As John advised I've started looking for comparisons. I found. John Lewis Natural Collection Elegance Egyptian Cotton Mattress, Kingsize £999 This mattress is 50 GBP more than yours. It also has a 10 year guarantee. It contains 4000 springs. It is quite difficult for me to do a comparison as JL and other manufacturers simply don't make info about their mattresses available as transparently as you do. Please can you advise which is best out of these two mattresses and why?

Also there is a huge difference in the spring count between the 2 mattresses. Please help. Eppie .

Hi Eppie,

Thanks for your questions.

The number of springs in our Artisan models [King size] total 1396 give or take a few springs. You question that the John Lewis Elegance has 4000 – over twice as many – so which combination is better?

I'd like to draw your attention to a manufacturer known as Savoir Beds – undisputedly renowned as the premier manufacturer in this country.

They only make four mattresses but nevertheless, their choice of spring unit in at least two of their models is practically identical to the ones we use. Calico housed and hand tied [not glued] to keep the individual units together. The conclusion is that if this spring composition is good enough for Savoir then it’s good enough for us.

The John Lewis Elegance is manufactured by Harrison Beds for John Lewis.

Harrisons / Somnus / Spink and Edgar tend to base their product range on an ever increasing spring count – currently at 21.700 in the Empire. Spring count is NOT the sign of a well made mattress, it makes you wonder that if the mattress is full of springs, how much room is left for upholstery?

You also draw attention to the fact that it becomes difficult to do any kind of comparisons because unfortunately, unlike us, John Lewis, and most manufacturers do not give you the relevant information you need to actually do so.

If you, or indeed anyone is spending this amount of money on a mattress then you really need to know exactly what is inside? We are very open and transparent about our construction methods as well as all the fillings inside all of our products.

Our Artisan Naturals is very much a true medium feeling model in the top upholstery providing that slight sink in sensation into the top layer but not too much. It has the benefit of being constructed using 85% natural fillings; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper.  Please note that we would need to know your body weights in order to discuss suitability of spring tension;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Hope this helps, and as always please feel free to contact us if you require any further information on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
