Bensons Staples Utopia mattress causing back pain

Hi my wife bought a Staples Utopia which we both have just had a dreadful nights sleep on. I went to sleep at about 11pm and by 2.15am I was awake and very uncomfortable as the mattress feels rock hard and not supporting my fragile back properly. We had a Tempur soft mattress before but my wife finds this too hot at night and I dont like the lying in quicksand feeling although I do sleep better on it now. We have retained the divan base that came with the Tempur and I will be putting the Tempur mattress back on tonight.

We had originally decided after much trial that a Vispring Woolacombe supreme was the right mattress for us but my wife went out and bought the Utopia on the spur of the moment at Bensons for beds.

It feels to me like the Utopia mattress is firm not medium and may have been mislabelled? I weigh 85kg and my wife is 53kg. I don't want to do another night on it let alone 40 before we can send it back. My issue is is there any way to tell if the mattress is medium or firm? How to extricate myself from the Utopia Mattress at Bensons mess and do you have a comparable mattress to the Vi spring Woolacombe supreme as the cost is painful!

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

We're sorry to hear that you're struggling so much with your Bensons for beds mattress. There is nothing worse than a poor nights sleep. Followed by the overheating of the Tempur mattress it sounds like you've had a really rough time with finding the perfect mattress. Further compounded by the spur of the moment recent purchase.

The good news is with some research and help you can easily find a suitable mattress online without any of the painstaking and expensive guesswork when buying a new mattress.

We do offer a comparative model to the Vispring Woolacombe which is our Artisan Luxury. You can read more on the Vispring comparison mattress models we offer here.

As for the issue of mattress comfort preferences such as the medium-firm its a big bone of contention with us and retailers like Bensons. More often than not retailers are actually referring to the spring tension when they set the comfort grade of mattresses. This is wholly inaccurate as these spring tensions are based on your body weight and not your comfort preference. The comfort feel comes from the upholstery layers on top of the spring unit. Usually, this can be seen from a detailed breakdown of the mattress grams per square meter. Sadly Bensons wont list these for some reason.

The 'medium' comfort will refer to a 1.4 gauge medium pocket spring tension which for you and your wife is correct at your bodyweight. However, the comfort layers sound like they are too firm for the comfort feel you're going for.

Looking at the specifications for the Bensons Utopia Bliss mattress show plenty of missing information which doesn't help us in our investigations!

Bensons Uptopia Bliss Listed Specification 2020:

  • Available in Comfort Ratings: 2 - Soft/Medium, 3 - Medium and 4 - Firm Support
  • 10-year guarantee
  • BSI - British Standard Kitemark™ accreditated
  • 5000 premium pocketed springs for superior support
  • Posture Perimeter Plus for true edge to edge support
  • Sumptuous layers of natural British wool, cashmere and silk
  • Hand-tufted for a firmer, supportive feel
  • Turnable mattress for durability and performance
  • Made in Britain exclusively for Bensons for Beds

What's also worrying it's incorrectly listed as a turnable mattress which given it has a pillowtop makes it impossible to turn over. So it's a one-sided mattress unless this pillowtop layer can be removed like a regular topper?

The only clue to the firmness rating of the comfort layer is given by the 'firmer supportive feel'. Without knowing the GSM's then it's impossible for us to accurately assess this for you. It sounds from your weights and comfort preferences like you need softer mattress upholstery alongside a 1.4 medium gauge pocket spring. Which we can offer in our mattress range for you.

Artisan Luxury:

Have a look at our Artisan Luxury a two sided, 100% natural fibre and softer feel mattress as a comparison to the Woolacombe Supreme from Vispring.
