Best mattress type for slatted base

A customer asked

We are an elderly couple, not as mobile as we once were. We think we want a firm edge with 1500=2000 springs, both of us are solidly built but not obese.

We like a firm mattress and do not like memory foam. Would prefer a mattress that does not need to be turned over. Can you help us choose the right mattress type for a slatted base?

Hi gwenne.mamos,

Thank you for your question.

We would always start by asking the body weights of the users of the mattress in order to match you to the correct spring tension.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The springs in the mattress are what give you the correct level of support. After that we would then narrow down the choices by matching you to the mattress with the correct upholstery to suit your preference. This is also known as the comfort layers of the mattress.

Some people prefer a sink in feeling, some prefer a medium feel and some prefer a much firmer feel; This is very subjective and what is comfortable to one person certainly isn't to another.

We would always advise that if you have any existing pains you don't go on a mattress that is too firm as this will serve to make existing pains worse or will cause pressure point pains if they don't already exist.

It's hard to match you to a specific mattress without knowing the exact body weights but a good starting point would be our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress. This model is a fantastic all rounder and as such is used in hotels as it is designed to hold a different range of body weights but still give that overall support.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something more natural then our Artisan 1500 has 53% natural fibres. As such is slightly softer than the Origins model and due to the natural fibres used in it's construction is generally a cooler mattress. We always recommend this range for anyone who is a 'hot' sleeper.

Both of these mattresses are ideal to go on to a slatted bed base as long as the gaps between the slats aren't bigger then 3". If they are then we would recommend to place sheets of MDF over the slats.

If turning is an issue then our Zip and Link range are ideal as these are 2 mattresses that zip together to form one overall mattress. Due to the separation of the mattresses they are a lot easier to turn. These are also fantastic for any users who don't want to disturb each other as they act as 2 separate entities.

I hope this has answered your question fully but if you do have any further questions then please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
