A customer asked

Hi John & Ryan, I came across your excellent site when starting to research a new mattress. Our 6 year old, firm posture, Dorlux reactive pocket springs mattress, bought from John Lewis, is starting to soften and causing me back pain most mornings. Can you offer a view on a good replacement? We understand it must be pocket springs. We want it to be king size and firm posture like the Dorlux. I am 5ft 8 and 10 stone and my wife is 5ft 3 and 8 stone. We recognise that you pay for quality and that it's difficult to put a price on a good night's sleep without back pain, so we are willing to spend up to £1k. Any suggestions?

Oooops…..sorry J&R. It’s a double mattress we are after not a king size. The mattress will lie on a standard slatted pine bed.

Hi Colin,

I note that you require a firm feel mattress, however, as the mattress will sit on a slatted base which will make it feel firmer, I would recommend that you opt for a medium tension spring.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Our Artisan Naturals in the medium tension is the one I would recommend at £1120.00 Aug 2018.

I would suggest that you place some form of barrier between the mattress and your slatted base. If the slats are less than 4cm apart, an old duvet or blanket will suffice, but if they are further apart you should look to place either 3-5mm MDF or peg board over the slats and this again will firm up the medium tension mattress.

If you have any further queries or would like to discuss my recommendation in more detail, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
