A customer asked

Hi, need some advice. I have a budget of around £800-£1000 and need a new double mattress. But this budget would ideally include a topper.
I'm 9.5 stone and my husband is 11.5 stone. Both like a medium-firm mattress, but only so that we can't feel each other turning over during the night.... but at the same time one we can sink into without getting stuck (maybe this is where the topper comes in?). Anything that's described as 'sleeping on a cloud' sounds great!! I have bursitis in one hip so need a bit of give.
Don't really mind if it's pocket sprung, latex or a mix (but not memory foam as we're both hot sleepers).
Help please!

Hi Juliette,

Thanks for contacting us. Given both of your weights we wouldn’t recommend a firm mattress, unless this was something you were adamant on.

This is because at your weights a firm mattress would be too supportive for you. This means that you will end up having to conform to the mattress rather than the mattress conforming to you. You need to get the balance just right, which is why I believe a medium mattress would be far more suitable.

Your options based on budget really sit between the Artisan Naturals, which is a calico pocket sprung natural fibre mattress and the Fusion 3 a solid core 100% Natural latex mattress and topper. Both of which are around the £1000 mark for a double.

So what is the difference? The Artisan Naturals is a pocket sprung mattress, which we would recommend in a medium tension calico pocket spring. It has a slower response time but a more robust feel over all in comparison to latex. It has edge support, which latex doesn’t and has a incredible 3950GSM of fillings. You get less of a sink but probably will experience a quicker feeling of support. It is made of 85% natural fibres and we often compare it to the Vispring regal superb.
The Fusion 3 is solid core latex and far more progressive. Meaning you sink faster. It doesn’t have the firmer edge so sitting on the side of the bed will feel softer than the Artisan Naturals. It does come with a topper that allows that soft sinking feeling. It will be warmer than the Artisan Naturals but far cooler than memory foam. It will cradle and support you but never feel firm as by its very nature it’s forgiving.

I’d recommend you go try a solid core latex, such as the Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign and the Vispring regal superb to fully experience the difference. Its not that one is better than the other, they have different properties, which you will need to decide on. Please get back in touch if you need more advice or guidance Juliette.
