Dual tension mattress for different bodyweights

A customer asked

Hi John, I'm looking to buy a king size mattress for a bed with a slatted base.

I weigh 7 and a half stone, and suffer with a bad back.

My partner weighs 14 and a half stone and has requested a firm mattress.

He also thinks that a firmer mattress will help with my bad back, however I've never found them particularly comfortable.

What would you recommend?

Hi Melissa,

Thank you for your question. Given the weight difference between you, you ideally need a split tension mattress.  This can either be done as a one-piece dual spring tension, one side with a soft spring tension for you and one side medium for your husband.  There is also the option of a zip and link mattress, both these options are available in King Size and above.  Both options are fully turnable but must be rotated to keep the same side on a split tension one piece.  So each person can have their own side we recommend turning the mattress from north to south.  This aids in even distribution of the natural settlement that occurs with all mattresses.

You're right to question the firmer mattress for a bad back as an old wives tale.  What you need regardless of back issues is a mattress that supports your weight but also offers enough comfort to mould to your ideal sleeping position.  You for example only need a soft spring tension to give you the correct level of support, this doesn't mean the mattress is soft (this is determined by the upholstery layers) but the spring tensions are worked out based on weights and the medium spring upwards would be too supportive for you.  The issue with firm mattresses is that it's you that ends up moulding to the mattress and it should be the other way around!

Artisan Naturals

Our entire Artisan range is available in split tensions and zip and links.  Maybe have a look at something that is a medium in the comfort layers. The true medium of the range is the Artisan Naturals which has 85% natural fibres and offers a cooler sleep surface.

Do you know the space between the slats on your base?  If the gap is greater than 3 inches we would recommend boarding over the slats with MDF or Plywood, this avoids the lumpy feel you get when the mattress dips into these gaps.  This will damage your mattress over time and you will not get the correct support from your mattress.

Hope this is helpful and if you require any advice call our friendly team on 0161 437 4419.  Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
