Harrison Austwick comparison to your own Origins 1500 pocket
Hi , having only just stumbled upon your site I am now in somewhat of a quandry , I've read quite extensively on your site and to be honest I am very impressed with the free flow of information on mattresses in general and on your own range.
We are off tomorrow morning having eventually found a place local to us to try out a Harrison Austwick mattress after having those recommended to us.
The mattress will be going on a old oak gothic slatted bed , the slats are 4 inches apart , I am 12 stone and my wife 9 stone.
You seem open and honest and first I'd like your opinion on the comparison mentioned in the topic and also your opinion about the slatted bed.
Should I flat board over the slats or do you think that would be fine as it is with either yours or Harrisons mattress ?
Thanks for your time and all the information on your exceptional site , it's such a shame more manufacturers are not as open and honest , it really has been a pain in the rear trying to find , try out and compare mattresses.
Hi Lee,
Thank you for your enquiry and the compliments with regard to the content of our site and our honesty.
The first thing to say is that we are unable to provide a specific comparison to the Harrison product referred to as the description of construction and upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre) is very limited. One should not be swayed by the large spring count in a mattress as 1000 pocket springs in a standard king size mattress are sufficient to provide adequate support for people of average body weights (9st -16 st). We do note that the Harrison product contains layers of springs which in fact take the place of layers of upholstery and in our view do not bring anything to the table in terms of comfort.
The Harrison mattress contains upholstery made up natural fibres, which our Artisan range contain. The Origins range and in particular the Origins Pocket 1500 contain man made upholstery combined with a standard medium tension spring unit. With your particular body weights, we would suggest that a medium spring tension/feel would be most appropriate to provide you both with the correct level of support. The Origins Pocket 1500 would be a suitable product, however, as you are trying a naturally upholstered products made by Harrisons, it may be prudent to view the Artisan Naturals or Artisan Bespoke 004, both of which can have the spring tension selected to suit and both of which contain natural upholstery, providing a medium feel. The Naturals has 85% natural upholstery and the 004 has 100%. All three mattresses are double sided, which provides longevity when cared for in the correct fashion.
As far as utilising your current slatted base is concerned, all three of the above products can be used on that, however, we would advocate placing a barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats. This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.
We trust that the above helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office and speak with one of our advisors. 0161 437 4419
Kind regards.
