A customer asked

Dear John, Ryan, Marie I love your website - it is the best source of information out there on the web when thinking of buying a new mattress. My wife and I currently sleep on a Healthopaedic Memory King (all foam with 3 inch memory foam at the top). It has now sunk somewhat on my side and we are looking a for a new mattress. I am 11st, my wife about 8st. We have about £400 to £500 for a double mattress (springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring). We tind to like quite a firm feel for our weights - I certainly don't want to "sink" into bed. My worry is about buying online. There is company which make beds close by - called York beds who make their own. Equally I am attracted by your attention to detail. What kind of mattress should I go for and is the "trying" crucial?

Many thanks .

Hi Stevie,

Thanks for the compliment, very much appreciated.  I am going to answer your questions back to front because you raise a couple of points that are worth expanding upon.

Is trying crucial?  The answer to this is an unequivocal No!  There is no need to because we know what is more suitable for you than you yourself do.  This is not an arrogant statement - far from it.  We know what will be right for you (for the budget you give us) and we know the compromises you will have to make in order to get the best available for that budget.  More to the point, we also know what your alternatives will be.

If you ask a bricks and mortar shop retailer they will say otherwise - and I am not decrying the fact that there are some specialised retailers out there who are equally passionate about quality and product, but who have chosen to offer the personal service in a showroom environment, albeit at a cost to you.  Another thing to consider when trying in a showroom is how long that mattress has been on display and how many of a multitude of customers with varying body weights have already softened the comfort layers.  This does not show you a true representative of what you would be purchasing.

To further equate this logic, your budget of £400 - £500 is not particularly generous, and so there are limitations as to what you can reasonably expect to have as an overall mattress build.  Certainly a pocket sprung mattress is achievable, but there is no way that premium natural fibres could be contained that is of any beneficial amount.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Your particular bodyweights are well below the average and so your priority would be looking at comfort layers rather than spring support, 1000 pocket springs would be more than suitable as it is unlikely your weights will ever be utilising this to the full.  Your choice of comfort layers for this particular budget will also be limited to a degree.  Polyester will be the main component and caution should be exercised if this component is augmented by specification (without actual weight given) to include cotton, wool, latex etc.  My personal choice for you would be our Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 Double at £520.  This is slightly over budget but have a look at our outlet section, where returned mattresses are offered at a reduced price.  This offers the support you will require (1000 pocket spring) and the use of Reflex and Polyester in a sandwich format is comforting but also equally supportive.

You could then be looking to add your own additional comfort layers in the form of a mattress topper if you found this slightly too firm.  Ideally, and for sheer luxury, a high-quality feather and down / or wool & cotton mix would add the final layer that for the budget you have could not possibly get you as a built-in component.

Finally, before sending your old mattress to the tip, I would cut out the memory foam layer and use that as the mattress pad on top of your slats as cushioning for the mattress [I am assuming you have a slatted bedframe].  Our Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 is full double sided and you do not want hard slats digging into the underlying upholstery.
