Help! Sciatica

Laura

Hi
My husband who is 6ft 1 and 16.5 stone suffers with sciatica and currently has a bulging disc. He's been advised to get an orthopaedic/firm mattress. Is this right? He prefers to sleep on his side when his sciatica is under control. I am only 5ft 3 weighing 9stone and do not suffer with any back problems. Please can you offer any advice on which mattress would be best? Our current mattress is very poor. It is a pocket sprung mattress and we roll together on it terribly!
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Laura,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The first thing to say is that with your particular body weights, you need to look for a split spring tension, medium for your husband and soft for you, although at a pinch you could opt for a medium tension across the whole mattress. Split tension mattresses are only available in our Artisan range.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

With regard to the recommendation to opt for an orthopaedic or firm mattress is concerned, we would comment that it used to be common practice to advise people with back problems to go for this type of mattress. However, of late, such advice is being contradicted by organisations such as the Institute of Chiropractors, in fact what you need is the right spring tension to provide the correct support for your body weight(s) and then the correct upholstery to provide you with the level of comfort required.

With side sleepers, we would suggest that you look for medium or soft upholstery layers.

Please view the Artisan Naturals and Artisan Luxury. The Naturals is a true medium providing a slight sink but not too much whereas the Luxury is the softest mattress we have overall.

With regard to the roll together that you are currently experiencing, this is likely to be being caused by your base. If your base is a sprung or flat slatted base, it will have a central support bar, which can cause either a bulge or dip to appear over that support bar.

In these instances, we would advise placing a barrier over the slats, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF, which will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent that ridge or dip appear in the middle. We would suggest trying this before opting to purchase  a new mattress, although it will make any mattress placed on it feel slightly firmer.

We trust that this helps but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
