How to get refund on ikea mattress with chemical fumes?

I bought a memory foam mattress from Ikea online in the UK. The chemical fumes are quite strong and are making me cough/wheeze. I want to return it for a refund. However Ikea said that they won’t refund it because I opened it so they could only offer an in-store voucher after I return it at my own expense .They also said that the chemical fumes are not harmful - my body disagrees.

is there anything that I can do to get a refund?

Hi James,

 

Thank you for your question. We do not sell or recommend memory foam mattresses. They require body heat and pressure to be able to mould to you. Your body heat doesn't dissipate but is retained within the mattress, which can be fed back to you, making you overheat. Latex is much more breathable and responsive than memory foam, but provides the same moulding sensation.

Memory foam mattresses can have a very distinctive synthetic odour when they first arrive. This is down to the fact that the synthetic chemical foam needs to off-gas. It releases certain particles as it settles and acclimatises, which is often made worse as many of these mattresses have been factory sealed in plastic bags as soon as they are made. Meaning this process of off-gassing gets built up and then released into your home. All new mattresses have a new smell to them and off-gas to certain degrees. With a natural fibre mattress, you may get an earthy smell from a wool mattress. We advise you always air your bedroom when you take delivery of a new mattress to help reduce and dilute this initial off-gassing.

 

 

IKEA have a returns policy that states any unopened item can be returned for a refund within 365 days of purchase with proof of purchase. They have a 365-day mattress exchange policy, which means you can try a mattress and if it is not right for you within a year, you can exchange it for another mattress. Unfortunately, I do not think there is anything you can do as they do not offer refunds for opened products. Please see below the link to their returns page.
