I am having problems with my 4 month old pillowtop mattress
Hi, I bought a pillowtop mattress 4 months ago. Regrettably, because the top is actually very uncomfortable as soft in the middle but hard at the edges so it’s impossible to sleep on the side as the arms get pins and needles while the side feels like sagging too much. An expert has already inspected it and accordingly to the manufacture it’s all fine. The uncomfort is unbearable though. Is there a way to make a pillowtop more comfortable?
Would really appreciate your opinion and advice.
many thanks

Hi Flaminia,
Thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your 4 month old pillowtop mattress. We do not recommend this type of mattress as you can not prolong the lifespan of the mattress by turning the mattress over and giving the upholstery layers time to rest and regain some loft. When you can only rotate a mattress, your hips tend to be in the same position which means this area doesn't get any rest.
A new mattress starts to settle from the first night of use, and it is supposed to do so. There are manufacturing tolerances for the amount of settlement a mattress can have depending on the type of upholstery fibres and the age of the mattress. A mattress will go through the most settlement within the first 6 months of use. As we are creatures of habit and sleep in the same position, the area where we sleep settles, leaving the surrounding area little used and still like new. With a traditional pocket sprung mattress, you would turn this over north to south and east to west to even out the settlement.
A pocket sprung mattress is also tufted which holds all the upholstery fibres in place. With a pillow top mattress, these fibres can move when you do and could have migrated towards the sides of the mattress making this area feel firmer whilst the middle where you are sleeping feels softer as there are fewer fibres in this area.
It sounds as if the edge of your mattress is too firm, causing the pins and needles you are experiencing. As a side sleeper, your shoulders and hips need cushioning to prevent pressure pains, adding a soft mattress topper can provide additional cushioning.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs please do not hesitate to contact our small friendly team on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
