I don't know which mattress I'm looking for and want advice!

Ms C M Brooks

I have a slated/traditional Kingsize bed (slats less than 4" apart) and have had a Relyon mattress for the last 25years (fabulous) - cost over £1000 back then but has, as guaranteed lasted 25 years!

I looked at the Visprung 150 traditional because I want a lifetime guarantee but saw your website claiming that you can match Visprung for comfort etc.

I need firm/medium (a soft top feel but firm within for support) I'm overweight (have to be honest), have chronic arthritis and back issues and cannot any longer turn a mattress due to the rheumatoid arthritis in my hands.

I'm a stomach/recovery position sleeper.

I would hopefully want a trial as its a lot of money if it's wrong and would need both a delivery service that puts the mattress in place (takes away packaging etc)/has a recycling service for present mattress.

So can you John Ryan By Design help?

Hi Ms C M Brooks,

Thanks for taking the time to ask a question and I'm sure we can help you whittle down your options to help you choose a suitable mattress! Ideally we need to know your bodyweight and height to help get the spring tension just right.

Spring Tension:

Your body weight will determine the overall spring tension you require. Please take a look at the spring tension chart below for an example.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Mattress Comfort Layers:

Your sleeping habits/personal preference will then determine how you would like the mattress to feel in the comfort layers. This is where you will achieve the feel you are looking for (soft/medium/firm). Do you know if you have a preference for a soft, medium or firm? This feel is always provided by the Comfort Layers of a mattress which are the upholstery fibres layered up on top of the spring unit.

As some examples of retail models with comfort layers you may have already tried:

Vispring Devonshire - Soft in upper layers - Comparable with the Artisan Luxury

Vispring Regal Superb - True medium in upper layers - Comparable with Artisan Bespoke 004

Vispring Herald - Firm in the upper layers - Comparable with the Artisan Bespoke

We also have a really detailed article comparing all of the Vispring mattress models here which maybe of use to you.

No-Turn Beds

If you are looking for a non-turn mattress, we only have one available and that would be the Origins Pocket Latex 1500. This is probably the only construction method where we would accept a one turn mattress as we usually steer customers away from them. However, given the Talalay latex layer having an incredible life span and resilience this model bucks the trend vs other 1-sided cheaper mattress in a box models.

Mattress Slatted Base:

As you have a slatted base with gaps of less than 4 inches, we would always advise boarding over this with plywood/MDF. This will then create a uniform platform divan which will allow the springs inside of the mattress to have something to compress against.

Based on the information you've kindly given we would advise you have a look at our Artisan Naturals model as a starting point and then maybe get back in touch to help us with the missing detail we would need.

Mattress Recycling and Disposal:

We offer an Eco Mattress Recycling service for a small fee. This means we can remove and carefully dispose of your old mattress in an environmentally friendly way.

The specialist recycling centre we use can break down nearly every component part of your mattress and then recycle it for a second life as something else!

We’re really pleased to be able to offer this service to the conscious consumer who wants to reduce their carbon footprint.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419

All the best

Guy
