Igel mattresses

9 years ago we needed a new mattress. We lay on a iGel benson for beds, fell in love and now we think we need a new mattress. When we bought it we didn't really ask the right questions and it was sold as a full memory foam mattress. It's only in the last 3-4 years I started hearing

'boing' noises when I lay down at night. So 9 years later the iGel is still with us, and we a hysteria of bed in a box.

It's a crazy place: your website has lots of data which seems persuasive but purchasing a mattress and their utility is very subjective. My question is : what do you know about iGel? I'm wondering what you would recommend from your product list for 2 adults:

both under 5ft 8"

Person 1: side sleeper 11st

person 2: back/side/front sleeper + menopause (feeling heat of current mattress)

mattress will be going on new king size slatted bed with 2" thick slats (but note your slatted bed views - divan not possible).

cheers

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your question. Igel is produced exclusively for Bensons For Beds. It is a gel-infused foam with either pocket springs or a foam layer for support. The gel layer itself is made up of small gel beads mixed with viscoelastic memory foam. Whilst some customers love the moulding sensation memory foam provides, others find that even the foams that are designed to dissipate heat more quickly are still too hot.

John Ryan By design Origins Pocket Latex 1500 on Charcoal Base

The only mattress within our range that has a similar construction to your Igel mattress is the Origins Pocket Latex 1500. This mattress has a medium spring tension as standard, which supports body weights up to 16.5 stone, depending on your heights, and the comfort is provided by two layers of Talalay latex. Latex is more breathable and responsive than memory foam, but still provides the pressure-relieving, moulding sensation. As all foam type mattresses require pressure to be able to mould to you, the lighter your body weight, the firmer the mattress will feel and vice versa. Another option would be a 100% natural, solid latex mattress. There is a company called Latex Sense that specialises in this type of mattress.

Artisan Naturals 2024

If you wanted to move away from foam-type mattresses to a traditional pocket sprung mattress that provides a more cushioning overall feel. Natural fibres provide a cooler sleep surface and help you to regulate your body temperature, making them ideal for those who run hot during the night, but also those who are cool sleepers. As person 2 is a combination sleeper, I would recommend the Artisan Naturals, which has a medium level of comfort in the 85% natural fibre comfort layers along with handmade vanadium coated calico pocket springs, which are more breathable than the machine-made spun bonded springs. The medium level of comfort provides cushioning in the top layer for the shoulders and hips of side sleepers but the underneath layers are more supportive, which means front and back sleepers do not sink in too much.

I would recommend checking the space between the slats of your bedframe. If this is less than 3 inches, you would just need to cover them with an old or cheap duvet or blanket to protect the upholstery layers on the underside of the mattress from indentations and possible staining. If the gap is larger than 3 inches, you would need to board over the slats with 3-5 mm of MDF or Plywood to prevent the springs from settling in the gap. If the springs settle in the gap, you will not get the correct level of support and it will damage the mattress.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
