Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry to hear that you have had problems with memory foam mattresses and hopefully I can help.

As memory requires both pressure and body heat to be able to mould to you. As this body heat does not dissipate, the foam can become quite hot which can soften it making it feel too soft and not supportive enough. Memory foam also loses its ability to return to its original shape causing it to dip where you sleep. Please click on the link below to see our short video which explains some of the issues some customers have with memory foam mattresses.

At your body weight, we would pair you with the firm spring tension to give you the correct level of support. This will allow your body to find its own level instead of forcing you into an unnatural position. The firm spring tension will support body weights between 17 stone and 23 stone depending on your height.

How do you sleep? The upholstery, also known as the comfort layers, determines how the mattress feels and this should be selected depending on how you sleep and your comfort preferences. We do not recommend a firm upholstery for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in your shoulders and hips. Likewise, we do not recommend soft upholstery for those that sleep on their front or back as this can cause lower back pain and neck pain. One of our most popular medium upholstery mattresses, which is suitable for all sleep positions as it has cushioning in the top layer for side sleepers but is more supportive underneath for front and back sleepers, is the Origins Pocket 1500.

Have you slept on a traditional mattress previously? We have found that customers that are used to the flat sleep surface of memory foam sometimes have difficulty adjusting to the tufted areas of a traditional pocket sprung mattress.

If this is something that you are sensitive to, adding a mattress topper may help to even out the sleep surface. The surface will eventually flatten to be level with the piping but this can take a few years.

If you prefer the moulding feel of memory foam then latex may be beneficial. Latex only requires pressure to be able to mould to you which means the lighter your body weight the firmer it will feel. It is also more responsive than memory foam and springs back into shape straight away rather than the slow return of memory foam. I would recommend the Origins Pocket Latex 2000 which will give you the correct level of support and a medium overall feel which is ideal for all sleep positions. None of our Origins range of mattresses is available as a super kingsize one-piece, only in a zip and link mattress as these mattresses have no flexibility and as they were getting stuck in customers' properties, the decision was made to discontinue this size. The Artisan range have some flexibility and are available in a super kingsize one-piece mattress.

For slatted bases, if the space between the slats is less than 3 inches (7.5 cm) we would recommend placing an old or cheap duvet or blanket over the slats. This will protect the underside of the mattress from indentations. If the gap is larger than 3 inches (7.5 cm) we would recommend boarding over the slats with MDF or Plywood with a thickness of 3 - 5 mm. This will give the mattress a uniform surface and prevent the springs from settling in the gap, if this happens it means you will not get the correct support from the springs.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
