Hi - I'm hoping you might be able to give me some advice on mattresses. I'm looking for a super king mattress with a budget of up to around £2,000. I'm 9 stone and a back/side sleeper and my partner is around 12 stone and a front sleeper. We're both in our 30s. We are not sure what our preference is regarding mattress firmness, but we don't want anything that is too soft and might dip. My main requirement is a cool mattress - we currently have a memory foam mattress from Warren Evans that I find far too hot (I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, which is not fun!). I'm also looking for a new bed frame and I'm looking at an ottoman (probably something like this - https://www.buttonandsprung.com/burdock-super-king-size-ottoman-in-dove-fabric#nf=1&selection.fabric=5555&selection.bed_size=5513&selection.bed_type=5520). What sort of mattress would you advise for us?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi Amy,

Thank you for your question. Memory foam is the warmest type of mattress as it requires body heat as well as pressure to be able to mould to you which doesn't dissipate and is retained within the mattress. This is fed back to the sleeper making them overheat. Natural fibres provide the coolest sleep surface and help you to regulate your body temperature. Wool wicks away heat and moisture quicker than any other fibre.

The upholstery layers determine how the mattress feels. The comfort depends on the amounts of each fibre and the way that they are layered. Given your sleep positions, I would recommend the medium comfort of the Artisan Naturals which is not too firm nor too soft. This will give you cushioning for your shoulder and hips when sleeping on your side but it is more supportive underneath so that you do not sink in too much when sleeping on your front or back. This mattress is constructed with 85% natural fibres and calico pocket springs.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

At your body weights the medium spring tension will provide the correct level of support which will allow your bodies to find their own levels and not force them into unnatural positions.

With a sprung slatted base, occasionally, the mattress can sit at the top of the arches rather than push them down which can give a roll into the middle feel or look like the mattress has sagged in the middle. If this happens, placing a piece of MDF or Plywood along the centre to support the mattress will solve the issue. If the space between the slats is less than 3 inches we would recommend placing an old or cheap duvet or blanket over the slats to protect the upholstery layers on the underside of the mattress from indentations.

With an ottoman base, I would recommend checking with the retailer or manufacturer for the lifting weight and the gas strut newtons to ensure they will lift the mattress. Natural fibre mattresses tend to weigh more than man-made fibre mattresses with the average weight of a super kingsize being approx 75 kilos.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
