Is memory foam right for us?

A customer asked

My partner and I need to buy a new mattress to go on our superking bed which has a slatted wooden base. He weights about 13 stone and I weigh about 11 and half. We both sleep mainly on our sides. Our current mattress was an orthopedic one which proved to be too firm and we have used a 2 inch memory foam topper for a few years. The trouble is I suffer from nights sweats and the memory foam is helping with that. Plus my partner feels the cold badly. I have mobility issues from a neurological problem so the memory foam also makes it difficult for me to move around on the bed. My hips are hurting terribly because I can really only get comfortable sleeping on my left side. My budget is probably £1,500. Where should I start?

I'm assuming pocket springs without memory foam is the answer. Thanks >

Hi Alison,

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with your current mattress.

Am I right in thinking you get too hot with memory foam?

I'll assume so and that your comment has a typo in it!

Also many people complain that with memory foam they get 'stuck' once the foam has moulded to them, meaning its hard to turn.

People may use the term 'stuck in a rut as well'.

The answer to this may lie in one of the newer more responsive hybrid foams such as coolblue or laygel.

These don't retain as much heat and are more responsive, ie return to their original position much quicker.

The best foam though without a doubt would be a quality natural latex.

It's incredibly responsive and breathable allowing just enough sink before support.

Based on your weights and requirements I would advise that a medium mattress would be most suitable.

If the heat is too much of a concern then I'd recommend a 100% Natural Latex mattress.

I'm happy to discuss things further if you want to give us a call.

Kind Regards Gary
