Looking for something softer than Loaf's Top Dog

My apologies in advance for using your website as a counselling service, but you do great work here. Sleep is such a personal issue, and it affects your entire waking life.

I'm a side sleeper, 6ft 5in and medium build. We bought our Top Dog mattress from Loaf years ago after a five-minute trial in the showroom, but it really doesn’t work for me. I’m now determined to try to find the right mattress using a more scientific approach.

Someone else here mentioned years ago that they also found this mattress too firm, and you said that spring tension isn’t the whole story. If the Top Dog is medium sprung with 3200gsm comfort layers, should that in theory make it fairly soft? I find it similar to sleeping on the floor... no part of me sinks into the bed at all and I wake up with aching ribs every day.

We bought the Emma topper a few years ago, and that improved things initially, but the memory foam softens over time and doesn’t address the underlying firmness.

My wife can sleep on anything and never has any problems, so there’s some pressure on me when it comes to getting rid of our existing mattress in order to experiment... without necessarily finding immediate success. But I have to try! Could you please give me a recommendation?

Hi Tom,

Thank you for reaching out to us about finding a new mattress to replace your current Loaf Top Dog Mattress, which you’ve noted feels a bit too firm for your comfort.

When selecting a new mattress, it’s essential to consider both support and comfort. Support comes from the internal spring system, which is tailored to accommodate the body weight and height of each sleeper. On the other hand, comfort is determined by the upholstery materials placed atop the spring unit, which are influenced by your preferred sleeping positions.   We would require to know both your heights and weights to determine the level of support required.    When it comes to comfort, side sleepers often prefer a soft or medium mattress that offers ample cushioning for their shoulders and hips. Back sleepers typically benefit from a medium firmness to ensure proper spinal alignment, while stomach sleepers usually find a slightly firmer mattress more suitable for their needs.

Regarding the Loaf Top Dog mattress, it's important to note that Loaf offers a variety of mattresses, each designed with different comfort levels. Since you've indicated that your current mattress feels too firm, I recommend considering a mattress with a medium comfort feel, which would likely provide the support and comfort you need.   Loaf do not provide the total amount of fillings in terms of GSM which means grams per quare metre of fibres used.   The GSM relates to the particular weight of the upholstery component but unfortunately most of the bed manufacturers do not state this as they deem this a trade secret.   Loaf mattresses are also rotate only which limits the lifespan of the mattress as you it can only turned around so the upholstery fillings cannot settle evenly.

With this in mind, we do have mattresses within our ranges which provide a medium level of comfort which contain either man made fibres or natural fibres so budget does come into play.
