Mattress advice for respiratory problems
Hello
Can you advise please.
I am a lady 'of a certain age' just about to purchase a new bed... I have actually bought a bedstead ( although I am not sure now I have done the right thing)..... the reason being, I have respiratory problems and with the divan bed I have had, I find that dust still collects underneath which is not good for me and the bed has now got too heavy for me to move on my own.Unfortunately because of my health issues at times I do spend days in bed so comfort is all important me.
A bedstead I thought would be a better option because I can vacuum underneath frequently.... although I must admit I am very uncertain about sleeping on slats.
I have been looking at mattresses which are as natural as possible.. and have tried the Harrison Monaco double bed (medium tension) which I like although I understand they are about to bring out a new range.
Today I also tried a Hypnos pillowtop mattress which I liked very much but having read your comments I realise this would not be a good purchase and I would be better off buying a separate topper.
Is the Harrison bed one of the best buys for me.... I would really welcome your advice before I purchase ( and I could still send back the bedstead if its not a good idea)
Many thanks
Anne Evans
Hi Anne,
Thank you for your question.
It is always a tricky one weighing up the advantages and drawbacks of any purchase option. It is true that I’d never recommend slats over say a quality divan or platform top base but in your circumstances the bedstead will help you combat the issue with dust.
The Harrison Monaco is a one sided mattress. It simply means there is only one side of fillings to the mattress. If this was a hybrid or foam mattress this would be acceptable as the manufacture method limits these to one side as they go from firmer foam to softer foam meaning if you flipped it you would crush the softer foam. In a pocket sprung mattress you should always expect two sides. The Monaco doesn’t give any discernible information about the fillings for me to compare to. The 3200 pocket springs shows no gauge so again I do not know the tension. I can say that to fit that many springs in a mattress means reducing the springs to much smaller spring units or they will use less upholstery fillings.
As for the pillow top mattress this too is one sided and with a pillow top being permanently fixed to the mattress once this starts to settle or in some cases fail, this then means that your mattress is ruined as you cannot remove it.
It’s tricky to provide an accurate recommendation but have a look at our Artisan Bespoke 004, which can be made with a medium spring tension. This is 100% natural and uses calico encased pocket springs.
If you can provide us with your height, weight and budget we can refine our recommendation for a mattresses that could be suitable for you. Unfortunately without this information I can give only give you a rough guide at the moment.
