Mattress choice and comparison

Hi we have needed a new mattress for a few years. It is now time to take the plunge, but it is very scary. Reading about bad backs and aches and pains after buying a new mattress. Obviously we want a comfortable mattress for a good nights sleep. I have looked at John L naturals, look and sound very nice but eventually found some reviews and they were not very good. We looked at Next, look and sound very good could not find any reviews then found 1 on face book not a good review. I know reviews are not everything but you do get some idea from public feed back.M and S some good some bad reviews. Simba sounded good and the 30 day trial was tempting, but i am not really into memory foam. Whilst searching, your website came up. John L naturals Depth 24cm, Next (sounds comfy) 38cm. (1) Does this depth add anything to the comfort of the mattress.Could you tell me the depth of your Artisan mattress. (2)We are looking at your Artisan 1500 or Artisan pocket 2000 because they are around our price range £1000. We are around the 12-13 stone weight .Would either artisan be a good choice or would you recommend another. Great website and i feel you want to find the best mattress for your customer.Happy new year. Regards Steve

Hi Stephen,

Many thanks for your enquiry and the compliments in respect of the content of our site.

The depth of a mattress is irrelevant unless you know exactly what levels of upholstery are contained therein. With latex or hybrid foam, again the depth is irrelevant without knowing the density of the latex or foam.

The difficulty with shopping in store is that the vast majority of manufacturers do not publish specific details in respect of construction or upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre), which makes providing any opinion as to quality and performance impossible. It also makes it impossible to make a comparison.

All our Artisan mattresses are 25-28cm in depth and a full breakdown of the upholstery in each model is detailed on the site.

With your particular body weights you ought to be looking for a medium spring tension mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The next consideration would what type of feel you require, which would then determine what upholstery you need to look for. The Artisan 1500 has a combination of natural and synthetic upholstery providing an overall soft to medium feel. The Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 has a greater degree of natural upholstery than the 1500, but will provide a similar feel for your body weight. Each can have the spring tension selected to suit, in your case medium.

If you require a softer or firmer feel in the upholstery, you may need to look at one of the other products in the Artisan range, however, the best selling product in that range, the Artisan Naturals with 85% natural upholstery will provide an overall medium feel if selected with a medium spring tension, but is slightly over your indicated budget.

We trust that the above is of help to you when deciding upon which mattress to purchase, but if you require any further advice or guidance in respect of our products, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
