Mattress choice for differing-weight couple
Hi there,
Thanks for such an informative site.
My partner and I are in the process of choosing both a new bedstead and a new mattress as a housewarming present to ourselves. The bedframe will almost certainly be a wooden one, so slatted, but we could probably choose between flat or sprung slats.
I am 5'5" and 9.5st, predominantly a a back or side sleeper, and I move a lot in my sleep. My partner is 6'2" and 16st, sleeps mostly on his side or front, and hardly moves at all while asleep. Both of us run warm at night. We move around a lot for work and end up sleeping on all kinds of mattresses and have never really had a problem, but both of prefer a mattress that isn't too soft.
Our budget could probably run to about 800-900 for a king size mattress but obviously we would not object to spending a little less... Especially since we live in Orkney and we have to think of shipping charges on top.
With this information, what would you advise as a good mattress choice?
Many thanks
Anna
Hi Anna,
Thank you for your question.
With the body weights provided you are both matched to a Medium spring tension. This is where you will get the level of support from within the mattress itself.
Being a side sleeper we would always advise to not go for anything that is too firm in the top upholstery layers as this can cause pressure point pains in the usual offending places such as shoulders, hips and knees for example.
The top upholstery layers are also known as the comfort layers. This is where it becomes a bit more personal as what is comfortable to one person certainly isn't to another.
Given the information provided and the budget that you are working with I would recommend our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress and our Artisan 1500 mattress.
The Origins Pocket 1500 mattress is very medium feeling in it's comfort layers; not too soft or too firm. This range is our starter range as they are constructed from man-made and synthetic fibres. This model at King Size will cost £570.00
The Artisan 1500 feels a bit more firmer in the top layers compared to the Origins.
However, as this range is constructed from natural fibres and materials, they are much cooler feeling mattresses and as such are perfect for anyone who considers themselves to be a 'hot' sleeper. This model at King Size will cost £890.00.
It's always worth considering the base that the mattress is to go on as it can make a difference to the overall feel.
Both of these mattresses are fine to go on to a slatted base as long as the gaps between the slats are no bigger than 3". If they are bigger than 3" then I would advise to place some MDF on top of the slats to prevent sagging between the gaps or the mattress becoming indented.
Whilst the mattress is settling I would also advise to place an old duvet over the slats if MDF isn't being used just to again prevent any indentation occurring.
In regards to delivery to Orkney, we wouldn't be able to fully deliver all the way ourselves due to the location. We could deliver to Inverness and from there it would be down to yourself to arrange onward delivery.
I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards, Lee.
