Mattress recommendation for a sleeper who is 6ft & 10.8st
Hi there I am looking for a new bed to go on an ottoman wooden slat frame.
It'll be just me on the bed and I am a back sleeper.
Was wondering what you would recommend as I see your cheapest bed is also the softest but I'd also rather some natural elements.
The vispring elite has caught my eye as has your artisan tailored pocket 2000. However I note you state it is medium firm so I wonder if it will be too firm for me.
Thank you for the assistance :)
Hi Tod,
Thank you for contacting us regarding a new mattress for your Ottoman Storage Bed.
When choosing a new mattress, you need to ensure that not only do you receive the correct level of support but also the correct level of comfort.
Support is provided by the internal spring unit and with our mattresses, this is dictated by body weight and height. At 10st 8lb and 6ft tall, you do require a medium spring tension and this would relate to any of our mattresses.
Comfort is provided by all the upholstery fillings which are on top of the spring unit and this is usually dictated by sleeping positions or preferred choice. We would usually pair a side sleeper with either soft or medium upholstery layers so that shoulders and hips receive some cushioning which will prevent pressure pain in those areas, a back sleeper would require medium upholstery layers so that their spine is kept aligned and a front sleeper would usually require something slightly firmer. However as you are a back sleeper but very light in body weight any mattress is likely to feel slightly firmer for you.

When choosing a mattress the GSM or grams per square metre of upholstery fillings used need to be taken into consideration. This is the one thing that most mattress manufacturers do not want you to know however once you do have this information, this will give you the upper hand when it comes to finding out exactly what is inside your mattress.
The Origins Comfort 1000 is the cheapest mattress which we make and contains man made fibres together with 1000 spunbond pocket springs and provides the sleeper with a soft to medium level of comfort. However, as you require more natural fibres, the only other mattress which we make which will provide a soft to medium level of comfort together with 100% natural fibres, would be the Artisan Luxury.
The Vi Spring Elite mattress , in our opinion, is suitable for people of a very light body weight. The overall construction of this particular mattress is predominantly wool based so provides a softer feel overall but it does not have or has very little supportive layers in between.
The Artisan Luxury mattress which we make, has more upholstery layers together with support layers in between which stops the mattress from losing its loft as the Horsehair layer has shorter and finer fibres which act like mini springs within the mattress.

As you have an ottoman slatted base, please ensure that the gap between the slats are no more than 7.5cm apart. If the gaps are wider than this, you would need to board the base over with either MDF or Hardboard otherwise the mattress could form between the gaps over time which will result in a loss of support. Please also check the weight limit for your base as our mattresses weigh between 30kg - 85kg depending on size.
One point to also note is that as you are a lone sleeper, you need to ensure that you utilise the whole of the sleeping surface to ensure even settlement. As we are creatures of habit and tend to sleep on the one side, the other sides of the mattress are not able to settle along side the sleeping areas and this, as mentioned, could result in uneven settlement.
