Mattress recommendation for chronic back injury

Daniel

Good afternoon,

I have been reading through the all the information on your website, which has been very helpful, thank you.

However, I am still unsure which kind of mattress is suitable for me. I currently own a Simba Hybrid mattress, which was bought approx 4 years ago. I have never really loved it, its quite warm at nights and I feel like its aggravating a longstanding back injury causing lower back pain and sleepless nights. I have rotated the mattress regularly as advised but I am just not as impressed as i was hoping to be for the circa £750 I paid for it. I wake up in the mornings feeling stiff, sore and unrested. I'm 36 years old and 83-85kg, in pretty healthy shape aside from the lower back pain.

In terms of comfort level, I have tried a few of the John Lewis Mattresses from the luxury collection range . They felt OK in store, but it's hard to really get a feel after just 10 minutes on each. I didn't really feel like I instantly wanted to hand over £1k and felt very aware I was laying on springs. They seemed to be missing that extra level of "cloud" comfort that perhaps the Simba (initially offered) or the panda bamboo topper offers (on my guest bed).

Price range I'd like to stick around the £1k mark and so was looking at your pocket 1500 and also the express range. Are there any others worth considering? and if i were to increase my budget to say the Artisan Naturals range, what are the key differences that make the additional £700+ worthwhile?

Many Thanks

Dan

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for contacting us with regard to a new suitable mattress for you.

We know from experience that finding a new mattress which will provide support and comfort is quite a minefield and as you state, trying a mattress in a showroom for a few minutes does not truly reflect how that mattress will perform through the night.

When purchasing a new mattress, it is so important that you not only receive the correct level of support but also the correct level of comfort.   Support is provided by the internal spring unit and this is dictated by body weight and height whereas comfort is really dictated by how you sleep.   A side sleeper would require either soft or medium comfort, a back sleeper would require overall medium comfort whereas a front sleeper would require something firmer otherwise if your tummy sinks in too much this can create an unnatural arch in your back so would aggravate any previous injuries etc.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The Origins Pocket 1500 would provide you with an overall medium level of comfort and support and contains 1500 spunbond pocket springs together with a layer of wool then predominantly man made fibres.   This is one of the most popular mattresses that we sell and is extremely good value for money.

Construction and upholstery layers of the Origins Pocket 1500 mattress
1 300GSM WOOL

2 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER

3 500GSM POLYESTER PAD

4 ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER

5 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS

The John Ryan Express mattress is one of our newer products and again provides an overall medium comfort and support but contains more natural fibres than the Origins Pocket 1500 and comes with a 7 year guarantee whereas the Origins Pocket 1500 comes with a 5 year guarantee so it would last you longer.   Although we provide these guarantees, we do expect our mattresses to last longer than the period provided.

CONSTRUCTION AND UPHOLSTERY LAYERS OF THE JOHN RYAN EXPRESS

1 250GSM PASHMINA WOOL

2 600GSM REBOUND POLY COTTON (50/50 BLEND)

3 1400GSM POLYESTER PAD (MEDIUM OR FIRM)

7 1000 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS 1.4 GAUGE

The Artisan Naturals contains 85% natural fibres together with Calico encased pocket springs which is one of the best spring units that you can possibly contain within a mattress as they are again very breathable and this mattress is more luxurious from a comfort point of view to that of the above mattresses.   This mattress comes with a 10 year guarantee although we do expect it to last a lot longer than that.   This would again provide an overall medium level of comfort.

CONSTRUCTION AND UPHOLSTERY LAYERS OF THE ARTISAN NATURALS MATTRESS
1 1200GSM BLENDED BRITISH FLEECE WOOL AND COTTON

2 HAIRPROOF CAMBRIC COVER

3 1250GSM REBOUND POLY COTTON

4 1500GSM 100% PURE MOHAIR

5 1600 CALICO ENCASED POCKET SPRINGS [49MM ] [1.28MM ]

All of the above three mattresses would be suitable for you however if you require a mattress that will last you a very long time then I would recommend the Artisan Naturals.   It is always worth paying a premium for a natural fibre mattress.  I myself have had the Artisan Naturals for some 11 years and I still find it extremely comfortable.

None of our mattresses will provide a cloud like feel as these types of mattresses tend to settle too quickly so do not last as long.  However by adding your mattress topper to the product would provide the feel you are looking for and will also protect the mattress so again will last you a lot longer.

I hope the above is of assistance to you however if you do require any further clarification or advice, please give our friendly team a call on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
