I am looking to buy a medium tension pocket sprung bed. I am ten stone female who side sleeps and want to avoid sore hips and shoulder. I'm considering a Hypnos Maple Superb in medium but worry it might be a little hard for me and wondered what your views are and what mattress you would recommend.

Hi Kay,

Thanks for your question. The Hypnos Maple is only available in a medium or firm tension and you're correct in thinking it maybe a little bit too firm for you as a side sleeper.

Ideally, you're on the cusp on a soft/medium spring tension.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The Hypnos Maple doesn't tell you the actual spring tension, just the overall feel which can be a bit misleading!

We don't have a direct comparison but have included other contenders based on the helpful detail you provided. We're surprised it contains the total weight of GSM as specified given the mattress is only 29cm deep, they must be really heavily upholstered/ stuffed! Either that or the spring unit is smaller to accommodate them, which maybe the case.

I'd start by having a look at our Artisan Naturals in a soft spring tension. There's a really detailed article here on spring tensions and why your weight will dictate which tension is best for you.

It has an over all medium feel in the top upholstery layers which should avoid any excess pressure as a side sleeper. It has a total GSM of 3950.

If you're wanting a much softer feel in the top layer have a look at our Artisan Luxury which contains 4600GSM 1200GSM of horsehair and 1200GSM of horsetail. We've included the comparison tables to the Vispring models they compare to.

Both these models have calico encased pocket springs which the Hypnos doesn't from the description.

Kind Regards Gary
