Wow, what an awesome site. I had no idea there so much went into a mattress (or rather SHOULD go into a mattress!) I am truly enlightened. I've been looking through the mattresses on your site and I am unsure what I should go for. I currently have a spruing slatted bed, and what I thought was a good mattress in a Silentnight Miracoil Memory Chenille, which seems to have just died a death, and has zero side support as it's rounded on the edges with a flat 'non-slip' bottom, which sounded great at the time. Wish i'd seen your site back then!

Anyway, me and the wife are both short and stocky, she's about 12st, i'm 17st (and both going down!), we're looking for a good king size bed that'll be okay on the sprung slatted base we have at the moment (Wife simply hates divans). I initially didn't want to spend any more than £300, but after all this education I see now that is unrealistic, so I'm thinking of around 5-600 quid. What would you recommend from your range?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the email. We're glad you've found the site useful and informative!

I have two recommendations for you.

The issue is that for your budget you won't be able to get dual tensions in a one piece mattress which ideally you need given the weight difference.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

You, for example, should be on a firm spring given your weight and your partner a medium. This does not mean that the mattress will feel firm but that the spring unit is dictated by your weight, and the comfort layers of the mattress are dictated for your preference of soft, medium or firm. The Origins pocket 1500 can be done in a zip and link set with a 1500 (medium feel) spring count for one half and a 2000 (firmer feel) spring count for the other half this would ideally suit you both.

Your half could be firmer to help support you. This is priced at £820 for the mattress only. We would advise that on sprung slats you board over them to avoid the issue of the humpback bridge effect or roll together. There is more on that here.
