Mattress toppers
Hi All,
I read on your site that mattress toppers should ideally emulate the material within the mattress itself. I just wondered if choosing a different material would affect the longevity of the mattress, or if it's purely for comfort reasons?
Cheers,
Rob
Hi Rob,
Thank you for your question. The primary function of a mattress topper is to soften the overall feel of a mattress. The added benefit is that a mattress topper will prolong the lifespan of the mattress as it is this that is taking the impact of you sleeping and moving around on the mattress and not the comfort layers. A mattress topper will also slow down the settlement of the upholstery layers.
We always recommend adding a mattress protector to your new mattress which will protect the mattress from any spills and prevent staining. We advise customers to try the mattress for a good month or so before adding a mattress topper to get a true feel of the comfort layers so that you can determine if the mattress is right for you or not. If you are finding the upholstery a little firm, especially during the first 12 months whilst the upholstery layers settle, a mattress topper can help. The thickness of the topper would depend on how much softer you want the mattress to feel, a thicker topper such as 10 cm will be softer than a 5 cm topper.
A fibre-filled mattress provides a cushioning feel whilst a foam mattress gives more of a moulding sensation. We recommend a mattress topper that compliments the upholstery layer so that you are only softening the mattress and not changing the way it feels. For a natural fibre mattress, such as our Artisan range, we recommend a natural fibre mattress topper such as wool or cotton so that you do not lose the benefits of the natural fibres such as breathability and temperature regulation. Manmade and foam type, such as latex or memory foam, toppers would eliminate or reduce these benefits.
All mattress toppers, whether foam, manmade or natural fibres are a personal preference on how you want the mattress to feel and whether you want to change the feel from cushioning to moulding and vice versa and they shouldn't be detrimental to the lifespan of the mattress.
Following on from my colleague's answer to your email, as you are looking at the Artisan range of natural fibre mattresses I would advise you to put a mattress protector on your new mattress and after trying it for a few weeks, if it is too firm then add a natural fibre topper.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
