Mouldy mattress problems
Hi guys.
Thank you for the effort in putting together such an informative website.
I was directed here by a customer of yours who posted on a well known forum.
I started off needing to replace a divan bed base and was looking at wooden slats because My bedroom has high humidity and the existing base had become mouldy underneath and in the drawers, along with the wooden floor under it.
On further research I think that the problem may have had to do with the new memory foam mattress we had put on top, but am not sure if its that or a combination of that plus high humidity in the room.
So my questions are: 1) would it be safe to replace with a divan (which we would prefer in terms of height) or should we stick with wooden slat type base whilst continuing to try to improve ventilation 2) Which springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring mattress (your 1500 or 2000?)for a couple averaging weights of 12 stone each with previous history of bad backs and shoulders.
We like the firm feel of the memory foam and it does seem to help our backs.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Carrie,
Many thanks for your question.
There have been quite a few comments of late regarding this self same issue with mould growth on the underside of the mattress. Humidity does seem to be the common denominator where moisture has insufficient means to evaporate. You would be best to try and find out what is causing the humidity in the bedroom as only when you know the precise cause can you do anything about it. I have attached a link which will take you to an article on our website with regard to mould etc.
memory foam is renowned for being heat retentive, as it requires your body heat to make it respond. If you are waking feeling a bit clammy then this needs rectifying either through changing your bedding to a more breathable product (Cotton) and removing as much polyester off the bed as you can.
As you both like the feel of memory foam, I would recommend for your weights the Origins Latex 1500. The 2000 springs would be far too firm for you both and would not give you the correct support.
