Hi chaps, Came across your site, found it very informative, though I am still in need of help.

I am buying a bed for the first time, I'm in my late 20's and haven't got a clue.

My budget isn't mega because of affording everything else with my move to a new flat.

I want to buy a mattress and bed frame/divan, my budget is £300-£400.

Any pointers on accomplishing my mission to buy a bed would be most grateful, Thank you, Angela .

Hi Angela.

My first tip would be to spend a day going around the usual bed shops to see what you £400 can get you.

This will be so enlightening and put your expectations into some sort of perspective. You will soon realise that £400 for a complete set is not overly generous. However, there are things you can do to maximise what you can get for your budget.

I personally would look for a bedframe (rather than a divan base) which on eBay can be picked up for less than £100. You can spend £200 on a pocket sprung mattress to be used as the support (look at the Pocket Memory Ortho 1000 from mattress man £195 (Double) as an example) and complement this with an additional topper - either Feather and Down or memory foam with the remaining £100.

This will see you through for a good couple of years till funds improve.

Hope this helps and good luck in your new flat

John and Ryan.
