A customer asked

I am 70yrs old, 5ft and 11 stone and need to find a VERY comfortable mattress for my 4ft bedstead. At the moment I have a Vispring Imperial soft mattress which I find so uncomfortable I have taken to sleeping in my spare room! Apart from a softer margin the rest of the mattress seems to have compressed to a solid mass which is incredibly uncomfortable. It is even difficult getting out of the bed as you seem to get stuck in the dip in the middle. I have the option of exchanging this for a medium firm mattress but feel that this may be even worse so I may have to purchase a totally new product and lose my £2000! I am very impressed with your informative website and, should I need to buy a new mattress, may well come to you. I would expect the product to last my lifetime so need to make an informed decision. Many thanks.

Dear Miss Dyan Humphrey,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Was the Vi-Spring Imperial Bedstead mattress comfortable for you when you first got it? The upholstery layers in this mattress, which is similar to our Artisan Naturals, has medium comfort layers.

I am assuming that the soft you mention is the tension of the springs. At your body weight a medium spring is the correct spring tension for yourself. If it was not comfortable, was it too soft or too firm? This would help to determine if going for a firmer mattress would be of any benefit to you.  If you are a side sleeper then a firmer mattress may cause pressure pains in your shoulders, hips or knees.

If you are interested in something that is very soft in the upholstery layers I would recommend taking a look at our Artisan Luxury, this is one of the softest models in our Artisan range which we compare to the feel of the Vi Spring Devonshire.

Have you been able to turn this mattress? Turning and rotating a new mattress helps to even out the natural settlement of the upholstery layers as does utilising the whole sleep surface.  When you turn the mattress over you are essentially ironing the underside and this should be done once a month for the first year with any new mattress and then every 3 months thereafter to properly maintain your mattress.

I hope this is helpful and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss the suitability of any of our mattresses please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
