Oak Furniture Land Mattress Fail: whats a better alternative?

Currently have an Oak Furnitureland Orrick kingsize bed which has solid slats (5cm wide with 6cm spacing). The mattress is a Cotswold Posture Pocket 2000 Plus' supplied by Oak Furnitureland. The mattress has failed after 31/2 years - I (11-12stone) sleep close to the edge and this now sags to a point where I can't turn over towards the centre of the bed because it's like a solid mountain.

Need to replace mattress - what would you suggest? Thanks for your advice Rob

Hi Robert,

Thanks for getting in touch with us about your failed Oak Furniture Land Mattress. It's a real pain when you end up with a sagging mattress that causes endless nights sleep.

Firstly with your slats ideally they should be no more than 2" apart as the mattress can start to conform to the gaps between them. We don't sell slatted bases because of this problem and they don't give adequate support for most mattresses. However, you can rectify it cheaply if you board over the slats with some MDF or plyboard. You can read more on that here.

Let's take a look further at the Cotswold mattress to see why it may have failed so quickly.

Cotswold Posture Pocket 2000:

There's very little detail given by Oak Furniture Land on this mattress. However, we can see it features 2000 foam encapsulated pocket springs. Sadly no gauge or tension given, probably a 1.4 or 1.6 gauge in our experience.

It also features 3cm of memory foam on top of this and is a one sided mattress. The problem with memory foam is that it settles far faster than other fibres, this coupled with the fact its a one sided mattress means there is no way to even out this natural settlement. So as you've found now you can end up in a position where the mattress has sagged and failed and there's no way to prevent this. It also doesn't disclose the density of the memory foam making it hard to work out its tension or firmness rating.

A better alternative mattress for the price:

Around this £600 price point, you should be able to find a 2 sided mattress model and avoid synthetic memory foam. if you know what to look for! A better alternative would be to look at our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress which is both two-sided and contains 1550GSM of fillings providing far more comfort than a mere 3cm of memory foam. It will give you a medium feel in the comfort layers with the correct support from its 1.4 gauge pocket spring for your bodyweight.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress

1: 300GSM WOOL

2: 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER

3: 500GSM POLYESTER PAD

4: ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER

5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS

TOTAL: 1550GSM

DEPTH: 30-33CM

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
John & Ryan
