Origins Comfort 1000 vs Brook & Wilde Elite - side sleeper problems
I recently tried out a Brook & Wilde Elite medium double mattress based on the numerous glowing reviews that claimed it was great for side sleepers. The mattress was very supportive, but I still didn’t feel comfortable at the hips and shoulders.
I am 10st 12lb and have a sprung-slat bed. How does the Origins Comfort 1000 compare with the Brook & Wilde Elite medium tension please- am I more likely to get a softer feel at the hips/shoulders with the Origins mattress?
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for your question about the Brook & Wilde Elite mattress and whether it's suitable for a side sleeper. Whenever you're looking for a new mattress you need to be able to accurately assess what exactly is inside the mattresses you are looking at to then compare the mattresses to see their suitability.
We have a guide here to the 3 questions you need to ask when looking for a new mattress.
You need to know:
- Pocket spring type, gauge and count
- Upholstery/fibre/foam details and quantities
- Mattress detailing such as construction method, how many sides etc
So let's take a look at the Brook & Wilde mattress and whats under the covers.
The Brooke & Wilde mattress from London is a relative newcomer to the one-sided mattress world and has the following specifications.
- Memory foam
- Thermoregulating foam
- 2500 Micro springs
- 1000 Synthetic pocket springs 1.3mm diameter (soft/medium tension)
- More foam
Unfortunately you'll notice there's not enough detail to compare the different layers as the descriptions are missing details like spring gauge, depth and density of the foam.
What we do know is that memory foam and other synthetic foams are really heat retentive and can be slow to react when you turn at night. This is probably why the Brook and Wilde has added all those micro springs to try and combat this. It may make the mattress feel somewhat dense when the foams and springs are mixed which is maybe why you're not too sure on its forgiveness for a side sleeper. The foams slow to react and the springs are fast but it's only going to respond as quickly as the slower layer which is that tp layer of memory foam.
Side sleepers need a softer top upholstery layer compared to a back or front sleeper. So you're probably looking for a softer top layer that's more forgiving.
We would also advise against a one-sided mattress where possible. This is because they can sag and dip at an alarming rate compared to 2 sided mattress models You can watch more on that below and why we always advise caution with no-turn mattresses.
Our Origins Comfort 1000 will be far softer in the top layer whilst still being supportive. It is one of our softest mattresses given the deep polyester upholstery layers on top of the 1.4 gauge pocket springs.
We feel our Origins Pocket 1500 maybe a better option if you're wanting a medium feel but with a forgiving top comfort layer. I think the Comfort maybe a step too far with softeness compared to the Brook & Wilde.
Our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress is a true medium feel in the upholstery layers and is available either as a 1.4 medium 1500 pocket spring support or a 1.6 2000 firm pocket spring support. We wouldn’t advise the firm at your weights of 11 stone as this would be overkill. It's two sided and so you can get far more life out of it compared to a one sided mattress. It will need turning each month.
