I am looking for a pocket spring double matteress. My husband is 9st and I am 8 st and we are both over 80 so would like the matteress soft to medium. My husband is very disabled so sits on the side of the bed quite a lot hence our matteress we have now ( springs with memory foam only 3 years old ) is dipping at the edge. This is one of the key things we would require from our new mattress as he is sliding off the edge. It needs to be extra thick as well as he cannot get up from the matteress if it's too low. How many pocket springs would be suitable for us. Is natural filling the one I should go for or can I get just as good a matteress with other fillings. Also I have a divan at the moment with a spring base and have to stay with that kind of bed because of the height. Would a divan base without springs or drawers be ok to use so I can keep the cost down. Does what base you have change the matteress in any way.

Hello Joyce,

Many thanks for your mattress enquiry.

You are both quite light in weight and although you have suggested that you like a soft to medium mattress, you both fall in the soft spring/feel bracket, please see this article regarding springs, which you may find interesting.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

All our pocket sprung mattresses have some form of extra support in the edges to avoid roll off, in the Origins range it is butterfly clips and in the Artisan range it is firmer springs around the outer edge.

Our Origins range comprises mattresses with synthetic upholstery, whereas in the Artisan range it is natural upholstery.

Both types are as good as each other, although for longevity, natural upholstery would be the best choice, albeit more expensive.

All our mattresses in these ranges are between 10 and 13 inches in depth.

Please view the details of our Origins Comfort 1000, which will provide the appropriate support and comfort for people of your body weights. The spring guide we use is that for people of average body weights (10-16st) 1000 spring are sufficient in a standard king size to provide the correct amount of support.

The number of springs does vary up or down depending upon the size selected and all our double mattresses have enough to suit.

As far as your base is concerned, if it is in good order, there is no need to replace it when you buy your new mattress, but if it not, the base paired with the Origins Comfort mattress is a solid platform topped one, which is 12 inches plus 2 inches extra for the feet, 14 inches in total.

Please see the article here in respect of bases, which you may also find interesting.

We have only recommended that you view one of our products as we note that ideally you would like to keep the cost down and this represents the most appropriate mattress in the Origins range.

We trust that the above helps, but if you require any further guidance or advice, please do not hesitate to all our office.

Kind Regards Gary
