Problems with Hypnos mattress after two weeks

A customer asked

Hi, 40 years ago we bought a bed from John Brabbs (Manufacturer) Leics.

which gave excellent service until we replaced it with a king size Hypnos 10 years later - cost £700 ish.

Within 2 weeks all of the filling had migrated to a centre ridge and we could feel the springs.

The dealer replaced it with a Slumberland Orthofirm Deluxe and within 2 weeks the same had happened.

In dispair we bought a cheap (£120) mattress and used it on the floor which was fine until Hypnos delivered our original totally rebuilt mattress about 6 months later.

Needless to say, 2 weeks later we were back in trouble and a visiting Hypnos Area Manager suggested strapping a strong blanket around the mattress which did improve things a little but we eventually skipped it less than 12 months and used a cheapie from a catalogue return shop for many years and eventually, 12 months ago bought a Staples Devon which lasted 12 months before we gave up on as it resembled a pair of hammocks.

The shop got it replaced but that lasted just 2 days on our oak framed very solid base before a 2 1/2" dip appeared on both sides and we are now experimenting with a variety of memory foam mattresses.

Any observations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am a reasonably fit 6' 14 st 67 year old and we just use the bed for sleeping so cannot understand why we should have such problems.

We are regular users of a hotel which uses Sprung Slumber Contract Deluxe mattress which are great but we cannot find a supplier.

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your question.  We would not recommend this particular Hypnos mattress due to the fact that it is a pillowtop mattress. The problem with pillowtops is that once the comfort layers settle, as all upholstery does over time, there will be indentations that you can do nothing about as you can not turn the mattress over.  You can get the same feel as a pillowtop with a two-sided mattress and adding a mattress topper. This way you will be able to turn both the mattress and the topper which will expand the lifespan of the mattress.

As the mattress you are interested in is a natural fibre mattress with a medium feel I would recommend you look at our Artisan Naturals or the Artisan Bespoke 004. Both of these medium mattresses have calico pocket springs that the tension can be selected to suit your body weight(s) and have a 10-year guarantee. The main difference between the two is that the Artisan Naturals in constructed with 85% Natural fibres and the Artisan Bespoke 004 is 100% natural fibres.  Both of these mattresses have a similar feel to the Vi-Spring Regal Superb (depending on the pace you will be placing it on) which is available at Funiture Village.

We would recommend that you try a new mattress for a few weeks before purchasing a mattress topper as it may be an unnecessary expense.

I hope this is helpful and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela

Hi Ron.

Experimenting with Memory Foam mattresses eh? I'm tempted to say "prepare yourself for yet another fall".

Let's look at what potentially went wrong.

Your Hypnos mattress was replaced within a matter of weeks for a Slumberland Orthofirm Deluxe. The analogy of this alone would be like replacing steak with a beefburger.

Admittedly, the Hypnos model at £700 could only be from their bottom of range - the value presumably being in the label, hence the remake but obviously not the product.

We're not particularly sure which Staples mattress you had, but looking at their top of range model - The Brittania - the specification they provide for this showpiece model is laughable!

The edited version is " ..a deep layer of hand-teased fine hair ... also includes luxurious cashmere, silk, bamboo, wool and cotton. On the face of it, it looks worthy of further investigation.

But I think the reality is, it's all fur coat and no knickers.

We don't really need to look at this mattress or strip it down to see how it's made or even lie on it.

The retail price [KS Mattress] is £1300.00, not overly expensive for a top of range model which would lead me to question the actual breakdown of this lexicon of natural fibres they take great pains to provide.

I mention this to draw a parallel to the Staples mattress you had. If this particular Staples top of range Britannia is indeed questionable - where does that put every model below that - including the one you had?

The reason you are making mistake after unfortunate expensive mistake Ron is quite simple. You are not being told the things you need to know in order to make a fair, educated and informed decision on your purchase - it's as simple as that. Until manufacturers start to openly list the precise breakdown of the contents of their mattresses and recognise this failing as a show of utter contempt and disrespect to you as a consumer, then stories like yours will carry on being the norm.

So let's look at how you should go about finding an adequate replacement.

Let's assume your budget is £800 for a Kingsize mattress.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

There is no way whatsoever that you will find a mattress jam-packed with wool and horsehair for this budget so you have to be realistic as to what your budget can get you.

  1. First of all make a list of 10 mattresses from 10 retailers with a retail price of approx £800.
  2. Under each mattress jot down the rough breakdown of the primary fillings.
  3. Reduce this list down to 5. Keeping the ones with the most natural fibre content.
  4. Telephone or email each company and ask what the weight of each component is, i.e GSM
  5. Reduce your list to the 2 best-built models.

To start you off and give you a means of what you should be looking to beat have a look at our Artisan Tailored pocket [£880 for a double mattress].

John Ryan By Design Artisan Tailored Pocket
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton.
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Poly Cotton
4 1500gsm Pure 100% Mohair
5 2000 Double Tier Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM 3950gsm

Feel absolutely free to post here any model you think you have found that may be a comparable or viable option.

Please give the office a call if you require any further assistance on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

John and Ryan.
