Question about natural mattress upholstery

A customer asked

Hello there, we are currently looking at a Kingsize 1000 pocket sprung (linear, not nested springs), double sided mattress manufactured on site by a small independent local business for £500. It has a 2cm ish shredded poly mat on top of the springs, followed by about 7cm of pure cotton then about 3cm of lambswool, both sides. It is covered in a damask material, tufted but not hand side stitched, and rated as soft. They have a medium and a firm in the same spec. and say that it is just a few more or less springs that makes the difference. I am really happy with all this, I am very keen to have natural fillings as opposed to polyester or memory foam and from what I've read on your site I think you would agree that this is a good mattress for the price?

The one thing I am a little worried about is that they do not use the butterfly edge clips, stating that this would not go well with the springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring as it would make the mattress too firm by inhibiting the springs movements.. I wondered what you thought?

Also, we are undecided about choosing the soft or the medium, we both preferred the soft one when trying them out in the shop and I suppose we should just go with that initial feeling, but will it get softer over time and so not last as long as the medium?

I weigh 13.7 st and partner weighs 10.7 st, we both sleep on our sides. I would be very grateful for your thoughts...

Hi Murray,

Thanks for your question.

At your body weights we would've matched you more with a Medium spring ourselves. Any mattress, particularly one with natural fillings, will settle over time - Our Artisan range can take a year to fully settle so it will always soften out.

It is worth bearing that in mind when deciding on the spring tension.

Side sleepers need to avoid anything too firm in the top layers as this will simply cause pressure point pains in places such as shoulders, hips and knees. As such, the soft feel here should be absolutely fine.

We use butterfly clips in our Origins range of mattresses and wouldn't really advise that these restrict the movements inside the mattress but obviously different retailers will have different stances on this.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
