Recommendation 11 st side sleepers with long term back problems
We have been looking but unable to find a suitable mattress for some time. My husband is 5 ft 8 and 11 stone. He has long-term back problems (prolapsed discs 4th and 5th lumbar).
He has not been happy with any bed except his ancient Sealey Posturepedic on a platform base (which is well past its sell-by date). I find this bed far too soft (possibly due to were and tear: the bed's not mine!)
I am 5ft 5 and 11 stone. My best nights sleep are in a Hypnos Victoria on a solid slatted base, although I do occasionally wake with neck pain. My husband finds this bed too firm and always wakes with back pain. Neither of us has been happy in a memory foam bed.
We are both side sleepers.
The only bed that we both find comfortable is the Premier Inn Hypnos bed.
We have been into a local furniture store to check out the Hypnos bed range, and the sales advisor recommended Somnus. After trying the Somnus range of beds, my husband felt the Somnus Marquis 14,000 (Regular on a sprung divan base) may be a possibility.
We have read your info about the Hypnos/ Premier Inn bed, and this led us to consider the Origins 1500, although based on our experience (and advice) today we are inclined to go for a sprung rather than platform base.
A friend has recently bought the Artisan Natural, which she loves. We are therefore wondering if this would be a more suitable option for us than the Origins, maybe even with different spring tensions (firm for me and medium for my husband)
We would welcome your advice on which beds you think may be suitable for us, and if there are any equivalents we could visit a showroom to try
Hi Kathleen
Thanks so much for taking the time to ask a question and provide so much information.
Hopefully, I will be able to point you in the right direction for you both.
Looking at the models you mention it seems you are basing your selections on medium models. If you are doing this based on the feel of your current mattress then that is the completely wrong way of doing it. Your bodyweight at 11st would require a medium spring tension to give you the correct amount of support. Your back pain could be exacerbated by your current mattress, incorrect spring tension can cause back pain as can a mattress that has settled or is simply too firm in the upper layers.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The advice used to be if you had any type of back problems you should get a firmer mattress but that is no longer the case. You need the correct spring tension for your body weight and the upholstery is then based on your personal preferences and sleeping habits.
Our Origins Pocket 1500 knocks socks off all the models you mentioned and the Origins Pocket Latex 1500 will be perfect for you if you prefer the firmer feel. If you are looking into the Artisan Range. I would advise taking a look at the Artisan Naturals in a medium spring tension. This would allow you to still feel on top of the mattress at the same time as allowing you to both sinks adequately into the upper layers of the mattress in order to avoid any potential pressure point pains.
