Recommendation for an elderly parent
Dear John Ryan, I am exploring an upgrade of a mattress for my father. He is very elderly and frail, weighs about 80kg and is a back sleeper. The necessity has arisen after a few unfortunate falls recently, and the consequent need for a higher bed to allow for safer transitions both on and off it. He has a very low Hulsa bed with its original foam mattress. I have so far tried a high quality wool topper which is much better and raises the mattress depth to approximately 28cm. I think this is about the lowest we should aim for in terms of depth, but ideally go for something deeper. However, the mattress still sags and I assume this is because the underlying mattress is well past its replacement date. The Hulsa foam mattress allowed the bed to be raised in various ways, but I think this will have to be sacrificed for depth and comfort. I am considering a Simba 34cm thick mattress, I have their topper on my own old Vispring mattress and have found it very comfortable, but my brother has one of your mattresses and says he has found it excellent. So I thought I would write to ask what your opinion and advice might be.
Hi Atif,
Thank you for your question. The mattresses in our Origins range have an approximate depth of 30 - 33 cm. Determining which model would be the most suitable will depend on your father's comfort preference. As a back sleeper, either the medium comfort of the Origins Pocket 1500 or the firmer medium comfort of the Origins Reflex 1000. As he is used to a flat sleep surface, the Origins Reflex 1000, which is now a two-sided non-tufted mattress, may be a better option to which you can add a mattress topper if this feels too firm for him.

Please note that none of our mattresses are suitable for an adjustable bed; bending them will damage the spring unit. If your father needs the base's adjustment feature, a foam-type mattress would be more suitable. Latex is a much more breathable and responsive material than memory foam, which may make it easier to move around on the mattress.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
At your father's body weight, the medium spring tension would provide him with the correct level of support or a medium density latex if that is the route you chose.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
