Replacement choice

Pam

Hi - we need a new king size mattress. Around 20 years ago we had a Staples Ortho Premium 812 pocket sprung and it was the most comfortable mattress we’ve ever had. (Our spare rooms still have them in good condition as not often used, but sadly they’re all standard size so we can’t rotate!). All Attempts at king size replacements since have been pale imitations or disasters. (I particularly liked that it was supportive right up to the edge and did not tip you off if you slept on the edge.). I’m 5’4” 8.5-9 st & hubby is 6’ 11-11.5 st. We like a medium to firm bed. We are happy to spend £1000+. What options would you recommend? Thanks, Pam

Hi Pam,

Thank you for your enquiry. Orthopaedic mattresses tend to have firm or extra firm springs along with firm upholstery. With the body weights you have provided we would pair both you and your husband with a medium spring tension to give you the correct level of support.  This would allow your bodies to find their own levels and not forced into an unnatural position.

As we do not have any orthopaedic mattresses with any of our ranges, any of our mattresses are going to feel softer, but pairing a medium spring tension with firmer upholstery layers would be both supportive and have the comfort you prefer. In our Origins man-made fibre range I would recommend looking at the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000. This mattress has firmer upholstery layers and a medium spring tension as standard.

In our Artisan natural fibre range, the firmest upholstery is the Artisan Bespoke and slightly softer and more in your budget is the Artisan 1500. This has a firmer medium upholstery which is more suitable for all sleep positions as it will have some give in the top layer so as not to be too firm for side sleepers but not so much that when sleeping on your front your hips sink in causing the lower back to overarch.

The type of base you put the mattress on will also affect the overall feel. A platform base with give the Origins range their true feel as they are designed for this type of base but will firm up the Artisan range as they are designed for a sprung base which softens the overall feel of a mattress.

I hope this is helpful and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
