Replacement for a John Lewis Ortho 1200 kingsize mattress
Hi
I'm looking for a replacement for our current mattress which is a John Lewis Ortho 1200 king size on a slatted base. We find there is too much bounce (is that the right term?) and if one of us moves the other is disturbed by the movement in the mattress. The base we got does not have very good quality slats and they are uneven looking even though it is only 18 months old. We are both tallish / medium build. Both have had back issues in the past and due to animal allergies I think horsehair is best avoided. My husband is convinced that going up to a super king would solve all our problems - but I think the right kind of mattress will be more important than the size. We are open to the idea of memory foam or sprung but I am worried by all the comments below about people having back trouble after a while on memory foam. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated - thank you
Hi Paula,
Sorry to hear you’re struggling with your mattress. I’m surprised you’re feeling bounce from this mattress given its one of the firmer in their range and features pocket springs, which usually reduce transference of movement.
We always advise that slatted bases are boarded over to provide a more consistent surface for the mattress. This helps reduce the mattress conforming to the gaps between the slats. It also stops pinching from the slats on the mattress cover fabric, which can damage it
I could really do with knowing your exact height and weight to provide a tailored recommendation, as the details will limit me somewhat.
If you have allergies I would avoid anything you know you are allergic to. Maybe have a look at our origins range such as the Origins Latex which is a firmer feel or the Origins Reflex. If you could provide some more details on your height, weight and budget I can refine the advice to your exact requirements.
I look forward to hearing back from you Paula.
Kind Regards Gary
Hi Gary
Sorry not sure how to reply below!
Yes you are right the spec of the JL mattress looks like there should not be bounce – but there is! JL have not been that helpful other than sending an inspector who said it wasn’t faulty – but that doesn’t leave us sleeping any better! I am 5’8″ and 10.5st – my other half is 5’11” and around 13st. We sleep fine in friends houses / hotels.
I think natural materials apart from horsehair should be fine.
Re budget – well we are fairly desperate for a good nights sleep now so anything considered within reason. I’m assuming if we move to super king everything will cost more anyway. Either way we need at least a new bed frame I think – and probably mattress, unless better slats or a board would make a significant (rather than slight) difference.
Thank you so much for your help
Hi Paula,
Given your weights and requirements for natural but no Horse hair, please have a look at our Artisan Naturals Model.

I'd recommend this in a medium tension based on your weight. It will support you but also it has very deep comfort layers, 3950 GSM of fillings, 85% natural, which you can use to compare against other retail models.
If as you originally commented the slats look uneven and faulty then replace the base, especially given the fact our mattresses are very heavy in a super kingsize 60kg plus in most cases.

I'd also check your access route for any potential delivery as superking size mattresses are large and our models don't bend or flex round 90 degree doorways like some other cheaper models.
If you want to measure your access route we can advise you on these measurements. I'f access is tight maybe consider a zip and link to get around this problem. This would be two single mattresses that can be zipped together.
Hope that helps, if you need any further assistance please call the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards Gary
