Replacing a Sealy Posturepedic double bed

A customer asked

I have had a Sealy Posturepedic Ultra Pillow Rhapsody with a sprung edge base for the last 10 years. As the name suggests the mattress has a pillow topper. It has always suited me, even though I have had back problems, until the last year or so but I think it's age is now showing! I cannot find an equivalent current Sealy bed so am trying to decide which bed to opt for.
I am finding my sleep more disturbed and often have pins and needles, even numbness, in one hand during the night. I realise there could be a medical reason for the pins and needles but, nevertheless, am taking this into account when trying to decide on a new bed.
I did think I should have a firm bed for my back problems but, having read through your excellent website, it would seem medium would be more suitable.
I sleep alone, weigh 12st. I do not want a latex or memory foam mattress and intend to keep my existing 10 year old sprung base, which still appears to be in good condition.
Do you think the Origins Pocket 1500 would be my best buy and, if so, should I choose the 2000 spring tension which would presumably feel firmer?

Hi Janet,

I am surprised that you have managed to get 10 years out of your current mattress as this is unusual for Pillow Topped products.

The advice which used to be given to people with back issues was that they ought to opt for a firm mattress. More recently the Institute of Chiropractors has issued advice which now contradicts this. What is required is support from the spring unit with the comfort being provided by the upholstery layers.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The cause of your pins and needles may be that the mattress has reached its optimum settlement and now is too firm for your body weight.

With your body weight, which is well within the range where a medium feel/tension is suitable,  I would be reluctant to suggest that you opt for a firm tension mattress or any product which provides a firm feel.

The Origins Pocket 1500 is an ideal product for people who require a medium feel, which is provided by the 1500 pocket springs and comfort provided by the upholstery as suggested above.

I would not advocate opting for the 2000 spring option as this is likely to be too firm for you.

Kind Regards Gary
